One pet-chain Autoship print: 35% off the first order, capped at $20.00, then 5% recurring. A marketplace Subscribe & Save help page did not print 5% or 15%; it printed extra savings at five subscriptions to one address. 1 of 7 prints a 365-day free-return line. 1 of 7 prints a 60-day receipt window.

Teaching math, not a crawled SKU: a $46 bag that misses a $49 free-delivery line and pays $4.95 ships at $50.95. A $51 bag of the same food that clears $49 is $51 at the door. The “cheaper” bag lost. That is the whole article.

What dog online stores cheap actually means

A store homepage sells a first box. A dog eats the next box, and the one after that. The selection rule is only that sentence: price the replenishment, not the homepage hero.

Compare stores on six axes only:

1. Autoship discount. First-order cut is marketing. Recurring percent is the year.
2. Free-ship threshold. Who pays $4.95 or $3/item when the bag is $46.
3. Price-match / price-lock. A match is a printed rule, not a vibe.
4. Return window. 365 days vs 60 days is insurance, not a personality test.
5. Store-brand versus national bag. House bags can win unit price. They still need an AAFCO complete-and-balanced statement.
6. Pickup versus ship. A 30-lb bag at the curb can beat a “free shipping” tile that misses the threshold.

None of those axes produces a winner. They produce a worksheet. The cheap store is the one whose printed rule matches the bag you actually reorder.

Missed threshold. $46 + $4.95 = $50.95. $51 that clears $49 = $51. The “cheaper” bag lost.

Capped first-order cut. PetSmart promotional terms: 35% off the first Autoship order, maximum savings $20.00, then 5% on recurring orders. A $90 first box does not get $31.50 off. It gets $20.00 once. Then it is 5%.

Membership fee versus threshold. The pet-specialty membership page we opened: try free for 30 days, then $79 per year; ship anything for free, no order minimums; 5% rewards, gift cards and pet insurance plans excluded. $79 is real money. Run the year, not the trial banner.

Pet-specialty Autoship: reprint the membership page, not a ranking

This is one store in the table. It is not the winner of this page.

What this desk opened on 20 August 2026:

On the paid-membership page, the sitewide free-shipping modal prints “Free 1–3 day delivery over $49.” The same modal prints “For orders under $49, shipping is $4.95,” automatically applied at checkout, contiguous U.S. only, no P.O. boxes, no international addresses. The same page prints free returns for 365 days.

Paid membership itself: ship anything for free, no order minimums; 5% rewards (gift cards and pet insurance plans excluded); try free for 30 days, then $79 per year, cancel anytime, email three days before the trial ends. “Free shipping on every order” is the membership-page meta line. It is a paid membership, not the default cart.

Autoship Terms (USA), last updated 22 September 2023, opened the same day: eligible Autoship & Save items save “an additional percentage” on everyday low prices. The company reserves the right to change Autoship benefits, including discount amounts. You may change schedule, address, payment, and products. You may cancel in Autoship Manager or by calling 800-672-4399. Subsequent orders get a pre-shipment email up to 72 hours before ship date; you can edit until 12:00 a.m. the day before. Products ship within the forty-eight contiguous U.S. states. The legal page uses $49 only as an authorization-hold example. That example is not a shipping threshold. The membership-page modal is.

This desk requested a product page to reprint a first-order Autoship percent. The GET returned 429. We are not filling that blank from a screenshot we do not have. Read the percent on the tile in your cart. Price the recurring number, not the first-box banner.

If the usual bag is $40, you are in $4.95-shipping land unless you add a real need or pay $79/year. If it is $55, the $49 line is already behind you.

PetSmart: the first box is capped; the match is not a marketplace match

PetSmart is one store in the table. Treats Rewards enrollment is free on the pages we opened; the shipping perk is not “the whole internet ships free.”

Autoship, from promotional terms opened 20 August 2026: “Save 35% on your first Autoship order up to a maximum savings of $20.00 and 5% on recurring orders.” Signed in to Treats Rewards. Eligible products only. Not valid on services, gift cards, gift certificates, previous purchases, and charitable donations. May not combine with other promotional offers. Treats Rewards members still receive free shipping on select orders over $49.00, prior to taxes and after discounts.

Free ship, from shipping help and the same promotional terms: Treats Rewards members, free standard shipping on orders over $49, signed in before purchase, transaction total prior to taxes and after discounts, qualifying merchandise, contiguous 48 U.S. states (shipping help also names military APO/FPO and select areas of Canada; promotional terms are tighter on Canada). Not valid on all or select products in live pets and fresh or frozen foods. Veterinary-authorized food, pharmacy, and dropship items can delay delivery. Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico are called out as slower.

Price Match Promise, from the returns-and-refunds help page: identical, in-stock item; lower price from a direct-seller competitor in pet specialty, grocery, pharmacy, or big-box retail; in store or on that competitor’s official website; PetSmart.com matched in store; price must be active and valid; proof required. Exclusions are printed: named marketplaces, auction or reseller sites, price aggregators, closeout outlets, clearance, “free with purchase,” BOGO, rebates, pets, services.

If the “cheaper” tile you want matched is a third-party marketplace offer, PetSmart’s own page says no.

Returns: site purchases can come back in store free for the purchase price minus shipping; original packaging; no prescription returns. Mail: call 1-888-839-9638; a return shipping fee is deducted. Receipts are valid 60 days.

Pickup, curbside (two hours before close), and same-day (eligible products) are the other lever. They are not a ranking against the Autoship site.

The marketplace row

This marketplace is one store in the table. It is not the method and not the winner.

What the Subscribe & Save help page this desk opened actually prints:

• Free standard shipping on auto-deliveries. Non-Prime customers may incur shipping costs for the first delivery.
• Eligible products often come at a discounted price. If there is a discount, it displays on the product detail page when you sign up. The discount may change at any time.
• Unlock extra savings when receiving five subscriptions in a delivery to a single address.
• Item price and discount are calculated before the reminder email. The price may move between deliveries but will not be higher than the reminder email.
• Cancel any time.

What the Subscribe & Save Terms & Conditions print: the company reserves the right to change benefits, including the discount amounts, at any time. You are charged the item price on the day the order is processed, minus the Subscribe & Save discount, plus tax, shipping, and fees.

This desk opened those official pages. They do not print “5%” or “15%.” Third-party explainers do. We are not reprinting a percent the help page refused to print.

Sold-by still matters. A national bag shipped by the store is not the same contract as a third-party seller using the same search box. PetSmart’s price-match page, opened the same day, excludes this store’s marketplace offers by name.

Walmart: the $35 line is the one the corporate FAQ printed

Walmart’s Ask Walmart FAQ, opened 20 August 2026: “You can get free two-day shipping on millions of select items online on orders of $35 or more — no membership needed.”

That is a lower printed threshold than the $49 specialty modal and PetSmart’s $49 Treats line. It is also qualified: millions of select items, not every SKU. Marketplace sellers on the same domain are a different shipping contract. The FAQ does not print a pet-food exception. It also does not print a guarantee that a 30-lb bag is in the “select items” set. Read the product tile for “shipped by.”

On price match, the same FAQ is blunt: policies differ between Walmart stores and Walmart.com. This desk did not retrieve the full competitor list. We are not inventing one.

Pickup is the quiet lever. A bag you can collect at the store does not care about $35.

Great Value sitting next to a national bag does not answer AAFCO. Open the nutritional adequacy statement on both.

Costco: the warehouse and the website are different prices

Costco is a membership warehouse that also sells pet food. It is not a pet Autoship store on the pages we opened.

Shipping (document CU1558, published 1 September 2023): each Costco.com product has its own shipping fee; many ship at no additional charge. Vendor fees cannot be waived. Fees charge when each item ships.

CostcoGrocery (document CU1477, published 16 March 2026): 2-Day non-perishable items carry a $3 per-item delivery fee, waived at $75 or more before tax. Grocery and Costco.com carts check out separately. Warehouses offer greater savings; grocery prices are slightly higher for packaging and delivery. Grocery does not price-match the warehouse.

A Kirkland bag on the pallet is the warehouse price. The same SKU under $75 on grocery delivery is that price plus $3. Kirkland is a house bag. AAFCO does not endorse it, or the national bag next to it. Read the statement.

Two stores this desk could not load

Petco. GET requests from this desk on 20 August 2026 to the Repeat Delivery / Autoship landing page and the easy-returns help URL returned HTTP 403. We are not reprinting a 35% first-order figure, a $20 cap, or a $35 shipping line from a page we could not open. If you shop there, open Repeat Delivery on the product page and put those numbers on the same six-axis worksheet.

Tractor Supply. Neighbor’s Club terms, shipping-modal, and holiday-shipping URLs timed out from this desk on the same date. We are not inventing a Preferred Plus $29 shipping line or a pet-food exclusion. Tractor Supply and Petsense stores still exist as pickup. A 30-lb bag you can lift into a truck does not need a help page. If pet food is excluded from a “free shipping over $X” offer, that exclusion is the article.

Sam’s Club did not return a public pet-aisle shipping policy we could open. We are not pretending it did.

Store-brand versus national bag

House bags exist because warehouses and pet chains can print a private label. That is a procurement fact. It is not a feeding trial.

AAFCO’s labeling pages, opened 20 August 2026:

• AAFCO does not regulate, approve, certify, or endorse pet food. States and FDA do the enforcing.
• The nutritional adequacy statement is “perhaps the most important part of a label.”
• “Complete” means all required nutrients. “Balanced” means correct ratios.
• Recognized life stages: gestation/lactation, growth, maintenance, all life stages.
• Three printed formats: formulated to meet; animal feeding tests; family-product statement.
• A product can instead say it is intended for intermittent or supplementary feeding only. That is not a diet.
• Snacks and treats conspicuously identified as snack or treat are exempt from the usual complete-and-balanced requirement.
• Feeding directions are guidelines that may need modification for the individual animal.

A $1-cheaper house bag that is complete and balanced for adult maintenance can be the replenishment win. A $1-cheaper house bag that is a treat or mixer is not a win.

Prescription and veterinary diets are a clinic conversation. Cheap is irrelevant if the bag is a therapeutic diet your veterinarian already named.

Pickup versus ship, and the match you can actually claim

Heavy kibble is freight. Pickup is a price.

Pickup wins when you already drive past a stocked shelf, when the bag is $44 against a $49 ship line, when grocery delivery wants $75 for one item, or when a shipping page excludes pet food. Ship wins when the round trip is worse than the recurring percent, or when the local shelf does not keep the bag. Hybrid is allowed: autoship the diet from the store whose threshold you clear; pick up litter at a curb.

Same-day is not free shipping. PetSmart treats it as a separate eligible-product offer.

Returns are insurance. Compare the window before the first unusual protein: 365 days free on the specialty membership page; PetSmart 60 days with a mail fee; Costco’s usual policy, day-count not loaded; marketplace S&S help printed no day-count.

A “price lock” is not a phrase on the specialty Autoship Terms. Those terms charge the pre-shipment email price or lower, and allow later discount changes. Marketplace terms use the reminder email as that drop’s ceiling. Price the next email.

Cheap is not a diet

AAFCO and its members are not practicing veterinarians and do not provide veterinary medical advice. If a pet is sick, AAFCO’s consumer hub says to seek veterinary care immediately. This desk agrees because we are not a clinic either.

AAFCO says feeding the wrong product can have minor to devastating effects, and that misbranding is a prohibited act. A cheap misbranded bag is not a deal.

Calories still count. AAFCO requires a calorie statement. Its example: a lite dry dog food cannot contain more than 3,100 kilocalories per kilogram. A cheap, calorie-dense bag can still be expensive in body condition.

Puppies, reproducing dogs, and therapeutic diets are not “cheapest bag that ships free” problems. If the statement does not match the dog, the threshold is irrelevant.

5. First-order percent goes in a column labeled “once.” It does not go in the 28-day column.
6. If two stores land within a couple of dollars, pick the return window and the pickup you will actually use.
7. Skip or cancel before the ship date if the pantry is full. Specialty Autoship terms give you until midnight the day before. The marketplace help page lets you skip. A box that arrives when you still have 20 lb left is inventory you paid to store on the floor.

Frequently asked questions

Which dog online stores cheap should I use?

There is no store ranking here. A $49 / $4.95 pair and PetSmart’s 35% / $20 cap / 5% pair pick different carts for a $40 bag and a $70 bag. That is the point.

Is a house brand automatically worse?

No. AAFCO endorses neither logo. Read complete-and-balanced for the life stage. If it is a treat, it is a treat.

Can I budget the first-order 35% every month?

Write the bag. Write the six axes. Fill numbers from today’s cart. Skip any row this desk could not load (403, timeout, GET 429). That is the method. A logo list is not.

Heavy bags, stairs, and why pickup is a price

A 30-lb bag that “ships free” still has to come up your stairs. If you pay a neighbor or a rideshare to fetch it, that labor is part of the door price. The Index does not pretend freight is free because the modal said $49.

Split bags (two 15-lb) can clear a $35 select-item line and still lose to one 30-lb warehouse pickup. Do the ounces. We did not crawl unit prices.

Litter, chews, and a second species in the same cart are how people clear $49 without buying a diet they do not need. That only works if the extra items are real needs. A $12 toy to save $4.95 is a $7.05 lesson.

Autoship that arrives when the pantry is full

Skip and cancel are the cheap features. Specialty Autoship terms: edit until midnight the day before. Marketplace help: skip before ship. A “set it and forget it” box that becomes a 20-lb floor stack is not cheap. It is prepaid inventory plus a trip hazard.

If formula changes, the statement on the new bag is a new step 1. Recurring percent does not grandfather a complete-and-balanced claim.

Third-party sellers on a familiar search box

Sold-by is part of the price and part of the return. A national bag shipped by the marketplace operator is not the same contract as a third-party tile using the same photo. What the old “7 cheap stores” title on this URL got wrong

An older audit wanted seven store logos and then the live page had bolted grooming tools. This rewrite keeps seven policy rows, two of them honesty blanks, and zero grooming cards. A store is a rule set. A clipper is a different URL.

We also will not write a first-order percent we could not load (specialty product GET 429; Petco 403). Filling those blanks from a blog is how this page fails the method.

Worked 28-day examples (teaching math only)

Bag A, $42, you use one bag per 28 days, no membership. Specialty modal: $42 + $4.95 = $46.95 if you miss $49. PetSmart Treats: if you add $8 of real need and stay signed in, you may clear $49 and pay $0 ship under that rule — if the items are eligible. Walmart select $35: if this SKU is in the set, $42 may already ship free. Read the tile.

Bag B, $70, Autoship-eligible at PetSmart. First box: $70 − $20 cap = $50. Recurring: $70 × 0.95 = $66.50. Twelve ships: $50 + 11 × $66.50 = $781.50. If you pretend every month is 35% off, you have priced the hero.

Bag C, Kirkland warehouse vs grocery. Warehouse pickup: warehouse price, your fuel. Grocery 2-Day under $75: +$3. Grocery does not match the warehouse. That is Costco’s FAQ, not a ranking against the $49 specialty line.

Prescription food, pharmacy holds, and why cheap stops mattering

Veterinary-authorized food is a clinic object. PetSmart’s shipping help already says those items can delay delivery. Returns: no prescription returns on the page we opened. A $20 first-order cap does not apply to a bag you are not allowed to substitute. If the veterinarian named the food, the six-axis worksheet still works for where you refill that exact SKU. It does not work for swapping to a house brand that “looks close.”

Drop-ship and fresh-frozen lines are the other trap. A threshold that excludes fresh or frozen is the missed-$49 problem with a colder box. Read the eligibility line on the tile. This desk did not crawl every tile.

Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico are called out as slower on PetSmart’s shipping help. Overnight upgrades have cutoffs. A “free standard over $49” line is not an overnight promise.
