A patio cot is a dry platform. It is not a doghouse. USDA’s Animal Welfare rules in 9 CFR 3.4 describe outdoor housing for regulated facilities, not a backyard porch.
The temperature lines still help a patio buyer think clearly. The eCFR text of 9 CFR 3.4 is current as of September 2, 2026. It says dogs with unknown acclimation must not stay in outdoor facilities below 50°F (10°C).
The same section requires clean, dry bedding below 50°F (10°C). It requires more dry bedding at 35°F (1.7°C) or lower. A mesh cot is not that bedding.
Below 50°F, an open patio cot is a wet perch. Pair it with a roofed shelter and dry fill, or bring the dog in.
USDA’s 9 CFR 3.4 also requires a shelter with a roof, four sides, and a floor. It requires shade for every animal, plus a wind and rain break at the entrance. A cot on open concrete meets none of those parts.
The AVMA’s cold-weather animal safety page tells owners not to keep a pet outside for long periods. If a dog must stay out, that page asks for a solid shelter against wind. It says the floor should sit off the ground.
Bedding should stay thick, dry, and changed often. Ground contact pulls heat down. A hose-clean mesh deck sheds standing water.
Sun is the other weather job. Coolaroo’s Large Original Elevated Dog Bed page says its fabric blocks up to 95% of UV rays. That is a shade-fabric claim, not a heatstroke treatment.
The same page says the bed lifts a pet 8 inches off the ground. Air can move under the dog. The deck still needs shade at noon.

Outdoor Mesh is the rain-through option on the same frame. Pick mesh for drain, or vinyl for a wipe-dry surface.
Coolaroo’s Large page lists a powder-coated stainless steel frame and a 1-year bed frame warranty. The same page lists a 5-year fabric warranty against cracks, splits, and tears from UV. The Large weight cap is 100 pounds.
That is the lowest cap in the table. K&H’s Original Pet Cot page says Small, Medium, and Large cots support up to 200 pounds. X-Large and Jumbo support up to 300 pounds.
The K&H frame is metal tubing with PVC or plastic corner connectors. The listed warranty is one year. Veehoo’s L size lists a suggested pet weight up to 110 pounds.
The XL and XXL sizes both list 150 pounds. The XXL frame is 59 inches by 35.4 inches by 10.6 inches. Height rose, but the listed weight cap did not.
A higher listed weight cap is not a chew proof. Kuranda is the only model here whose maker prints a chew-proof warranty on the bed page. Coolaroo’s FAQ says the fabric is 100% recyclable and not meant for chewing.
Size, height, and how a dog gets on
Buy length first. Kuranda’s aluminum size guide says measure nose to the base of the tail, then add 4 inches. That added length keeps the dog inside the rails.
Kuranda lists six aluminum sizes from 25 by 18 inches to 50 by 36 inches. The page says to subtract 3.25 inches from length and width for inner dimensions. A 40 by 25 inch Large is the size in our table.
Coolaroo’s Large frame is 51 by 31.5 by 7.6 inches. The fabric panel is listed at 43.3 by 31.5 inches. The dog sleeps on the fabric, not the full steel rectangle.
Coolaroo’s size FAQ caps Small at 50 pounds, Medium at 75, Large at 100, and Extra Large at 150. K&H’s Large cot is 30 by 42 by 7 inches. Jumbo is 56 by 38 by 9 inches.
Clearance on the K&H product page is listed as 7 to 9 inches, depending on size. Veehoo’s L is 43 by 30 by 8.5 inches. XL is 47 by 32 by 9.5 inches.
XXL is 10.6 inches tall. Senior dogs and short-legged dogs may stall at 9 or 10 inches.
Pair a tall cot with dog steps for a high bed. A dog ramp for the bed is the other access fix. A cot that a dog cannot mount is unused gear.
Do not size a patio cot to a crate unless the dog will sleep in that crate. Patio use wants stretch room.
