Quick answer: The best dog treat is the bag that lists calories and fits one job: training, dental, or a daily reward. Soft bites fit many reps; freeze-dried liver fits high-value work; a dental chew is a once-a-day job.

The best dog treat is the bag that lists calories and matches one job.

This page is a 2026 research-desk comparison of seven treats sold now. We did not run kennel trials, rank a top list, or invent prices.

Our research team compared published specs for these seven bags. Listed calories in this set run from 24 kcal per piece to an 88 kcal meal cut.

The Label-Calorie-Job rule

We used one rule: a bag had to be sold now, name a form, and have a readable maker page.

That is the Label-Calorie-Job rule. The page had to be one we could actually read. The treat had to be sold under the exact name on this page.

We kept seven bags that met the rule. Jerky: Pur Luv Chicken Jerky Dog Treats and Full Moon All Natural Human Grade Dog Treats. Soft bite: Milk-Bone Soft & Dog Treats. Freeze-dried: Vital Essentials Freeze Dried Dog Treats and Stewart Freeze Dried Dog Treats. Biscuit: Blue Buffalo Health Bars Bacon Egg & Cheese Dog Biscuits. Dental chew: Greenies Regular Dental Dog Treats.

We left out rawhide toys, complete meals, and puppy-only bags. We also left out any ranked “best overall” pick. A treat is not a meal. We used maker feeding lines for portion math, not a house ranking.

Seven bags, five jobs

These seven bags cover five jobs. They are not backups for each other.

Use this map before you open a bag:

  • Many tiny reps: Milk-Bone Soft & Dog Treats, or a broken freeze-dried cube
  • High-value yes: Vital Essentials Freeze Dried Dog Treats or Stewart Freeze Dried Dog Treats
  • Slow chew reward: Pur Luv Chicken Jerky Dog Treats or Full Moon All Natural Human Grade Dog Treats
  • Crunchy daily cookie: Blue Buffalo Health Bars Bacon Egg & Cheese Dog Biscuits
  • Once-a-day dental chew: Greenies Regular Dental Dog Treats

If you need dozens of sit-stay reps, a biscuit is the wrong tool. That job is a small-piece problem. We keep that split on our training-treat desk.

If the dog is shredding shoes, switch problems. A soft treat will not replace a chew plan. That is a chewing problem, not a treat-shopping problem.

If you need a pack to carry the bag on a long walk, that is gear. A treat label is not a backpack. We keep that split on our Non-Stop Dog Gear notes.

How the seven bags compare

Calories only help if you know the unit. These bags do not use one unit.

Read the table as a unit key, not a scoreboard. 24 kcal per piece is not the same math as 114 kcal per ounce.

Vital Essentials Freeze Dried Dog Treats sit in the same high-value job as Stewart. The Vital Essentials chicken-hearts page lists 1.9-oz and 3.75-oz bags and calls the treat a single-ingredient piece. It does not list kcal on that page. Use the bag in your hand, or use Stewart’s numbered ounce line if you need that math today.

The PUR LUV page calls Pur Luv Chicken Jerky Dog Treats a limited-ingredient jerky. It names real chicken as the first ingredient. It does not list kcal on that page.

Calories, units, and the 24-to-88 spread

The useful number is the one on the bag, in the unit the maker printed.

Our research team compared those published specs. Four sourced maker pages listed a calorie figure. The PUR LUV, Vital Essentials, and Blue Buffalo pages we read did not.

Here is the calorie set we could verify:

  • Milk-Bone’s Soft & chicken page lists 24 kcal per piece and 3,050 kcal/kg.
  • Full Moon’s chicken jerky page lists 43 kcal per treat and 2,890 kcal/kg.
  • The Greenies Regular page says to reduce the main meal by 88 kcal for each chew.
  • Stewart’s single-ingredient page lists 114 kcal per ounce for chicken liver, or 4,035 kcal/kg.

Those four numbers are not interchangeable. A piece, an ounce, and a meal cut are three different units.

Milk-Bone’s page also lists 18.0% minimum crude protein and 22.0% maximum moisture. Full Moon’s page lists 54.0% minimum crude protein and 22.0% maximum moisture. Stewart’s chicken-liver line lists 60% minimum crude protein and 7.5% maximum moisture.

Protein percent is not a score. It is a label line. A soft bite and a dry liver cube are built for different jobs.

The Blue Buffalo Health Bars page lists four bag sizes: 16-oz, 32-oz, 3.5-lb, and 5-lb. It names bacon, dried egg product, and cheese. It does not list kcal on that page. Read the bag for the bar’s calorie line.

Match the bag to one job

Pick the job first. Then pick the form.

Milk-Bone Soft & Dog Treats are the soft daily bite in this set. The Milk-Bone page says chicken is the first ingredient. It also says the treat is not for dogs under one year or under 10 pounds.

That 24 kcal piece is a full bite. Break it if you need many reps. The page says the product is for intermittent or supplemental feeding only.

Stewart Freeze Dried Dog Treats are the numbered freeze-dried line in this set. The Stewart page lists 100% pure chicken liver as the ingredient for that recipe. It lists 60% minimum crude protein and 114 kcal per ounce.

Stewart’s feeding line for a 10–30 lb dog is 1–2 treats. For 30–60 lb it is 2–4 treats. For dogs over 60 lb it is 4–6 treats. The page says those treats may be fed three times daily.

Pur Luv Chicken Jerky Dog Treats are a chew-shaped jerky. The PUR LUV page says the jerky is high protein and low fat. It says there are no artificial flavors or colors. Count pieces only after you read kcal on your bag.

Full Moon All Natural Human Grade Dog Treats are the jerky with a printed piece calorie. The Full Moon page lists 43 kcal per treat. It also labels the jerky human grade and grain free.

Full Moon’s daily feeding chart is a piece count:

  • 5–15 lb: ½–1½ treats
  • 15–30 lb: 1½–3 treats
  • 30–50 lb: 3–4 treats
  • 50–75+ lb: 4–5 treats

At 43 kcal, three treats are 129 kcal. That is already a large slice of a small dog’s day.

Blue Buffalo Health Bars Bacon Egg & Cheese Dog Biscuits are the crunchy cookie. The Blue Buffalo page describes a crunchy biscuit. Break a bar if you need a smaller piece. Then count the kcal printed on your bag.

Dental is a once-a-day job

A dental chew is not a training bag. Greenies Regular Dental Dog Treats are built for one job: one chew per day.

The Greenies Regular page sets Regular size for dogs 25–50 pounds. It says to feed one dental treat per day. It says the chew is not for dogs under 5 pounds or under 6 months.

The same page tells you to cut the main meal by 88 kcal for each Regular chew. That is the calorie rule for this bag.

Greenies also prints a size ladder:

  • Teenie: 5–15 lb
  • Petite: 15–25 lb
  • Regular: 25–50 lb
  • Large: 50–100 lb

The Greenies Regular page states 47% less tartar and 40% less plaque in 28 days, as Greenies’ own on-file data. We did not rerun that work. We are reporting the line on the product page.

Do not stack a Regular Greenie with a full biscuit and a handful of liver. One 88 kcal meal cut plus other extras will blow the day’s extra-calorie budget.

How to portion from the label

Use the maker’s own feeding line. Then cut the meal by that calorie number.

Do this in order:

  1. Read the calorie line on the bag. Note the unit: piece, ounce, or meal cut.
  2. Write the dog’s daily food calories from the main-diet bag.
  3. Add only the treats you will actually hand out.
  4. Subtract that treat total from the meal.

Worked numbers from the pages we read:

  • One Milk-Bone Soft & piece is 24 kcal.
  • One Full Moon jerky piece is 43 kcal.
  • One Greenies Regular chew means an 88 kcal meal cut.
  • One ounce of Stewart chicken liver is 114 kcal.

Five Milk-Bone pieces are 120 kcal. That is more than one Greenies Regular meal cut. Three Full Moon pieces are 129 kcal.

Stewart’s 10–30 lb line is 1–2 treats. If your “treat” is a full ounce, you are at 114 kcal before lunch. Break the cube.

The Milk-Bone page lists 2.7-oz, 5.6-oz, and 25-oz packs. The Greenies Regular page lists 3.0-oz, 6.0-oz, 12.0-oz, 27.0-oz, and 36.0-oz packs. Pack size is not a serving size.

Watch the dog chew. The Greenies page says gulping any item can be harmful. That watch rule applies to jerky strips too.

FAQ

What is the best dog treat?

The best dog treat is the bag that lists calories and matches one job. For many reps, use a soft bite you can break. For a single high-value yes, use a freeze-dried liver cube. For daily dental work, use one correctly sized chew and cut the meal.

How many treats can I give in one day?

Use the maker’s chart, then do the calorie math. Stewart lists 1–2 treats for a 10–30 lb dog. Greenies Regular is one chew per day for a 25–50 lb dog. Full Moon lists ½–1½ treats for a 5–15 lb dog. Add the kcal. Then cut the meal by that amount.

Are freeze-dried treats better than biscuits?

No. They are built for different jobs. Stewart’s chicken-liver page lists 60% minimum protein and 114 kcal per ounce. Blue Buffalo Health Bars Bacon Egg & Cheese Dog Biscuits are a crunchy daily cookie. High protein does not make a cube a daily biscuit.

Can I use Greenies Regular as training treats?

No. The Greenies Regular page says to feed one dental treat per day. It also says to cut the meal by 88 kcal. That is a once-a-day chew for a 25–50 lb dog. Breaking it into ten training pieces still spends that 88 kcal.

What if the bag does not list calories?

Do not guess. The PUR LUV, Vital Essentials, and Blue Buffalo pages we read did not list kcal. Use a bag that prints the number, or ask the maker for the current label line before you portion.

Is jerky the same thing as a dental chew?

No. Jerky is a meat strip. A dental chew is a shaped once-a-day piece. Full Moon lists 43 kcal per jerky treat and 54.0% minimum protein. Greenies Regular is a 25–50 lb daily chew with an 88 kcal meal cut. Do not swap them.
