Use the Three-Label Check before you treat any freeze-dried bag as a full diet.
First, read the nutritional adequacy sentence. The FDA’s “Complete and Balanced” page limits that phrase to an AAFCO nutrient profile or an AAFCO feeding trial. Mixers and treats often fail this gate on purpose.
Second, convert protein to a dry-matter basis. Subtract the moisture guarantee from 100. Divide crude protein by that figure, then multiply by 100.

Third, match the calorie unit to the feeding chart. Stella doses in patties at 56 kcal each. Open Farm and K9 Natural dose in cups, while Primal doses in nuggets at 46 kcal each.

What FDA documents say about raw handling
Freeze-drying does not turn a raw recipe into a cooked one. Handle the bag the way the FDA describes raw pet food.
From October 2010 through July 2012, the FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine screened more than 1,000 pet-food samples. The second year added 196 commercially available raw dog and cat foods.
Of those 196 raw samples, 15 were positive for Salmonella. Thirty-two were positive for Listeria monocytogenes. Dry dog food in the same table showed 0 Salmonella positives in 120 samples.
That study used frozen raw tubes, not freeze-dried patties. It still names the hazard class these dinners belong to.
The FDA’s raw-diet page says to wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds after handling. It also gives a bleach mix of 1 tablespoon bleach to 1 quart of water. A larger batch is ¼ cup bleach to 1 gallon, used after a hot soapy wash.
Do not let a dog lick a person’s face after a raw meal. Keep raw food separate from human food. Those are FDA instructions, not our house rules.
