Most always-hungry dogs are overfed by treats or dense kibble, not underfed at dinner. This page is a research-desk label comparison of currently sold adult foods and meal-pacing tools. We did not run feeding trials, weigh clinic patients, or diagnose any dog.
Our research team analyzed published calorie statements, guaranteed analyses, and maker size specs. We compared those numbers with the Association of American Feed Control Officials reading-labels rules. We also compared them with the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention 2022 prevalence survey.
What we included, and what we left out
We used one selection rule. A food entered this page only if the maker published kcal per cup on its own product page. A tool entered only if the maker published a hold capacity or a linear size.
We left out prescription-only diets. We left out raw-feeding protocols. We left out breed-only temperament essays.
We also left out ranked “best food” lists. Rank does not tell you how many calories sit in one cup.
The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention’s 2022 survey evaluated 1,152 pets, including 880 dogs. Veterinary professionals classed 59% of those dogs as overweight or as having obesity. That split was 37% overweight and 22% obese.
The same report defines obesity as a body condition score of 8 to 9. It also defines obesity as about 30% above ideal body weight. Nearly 32% of owners of overweight pets still called the pet normal, ideal, or thin.
Those two facts change the search. Extra hunger often sits next to extra weight. It does not always mean the dinner bowl is too small.
Weigh the meal before you change the food
Start with a kitchen scale. Cups lie. Kibble size changes how much an eight-ounce cup holds.
The Association of American Feed Control Officials requires a calorie statement on dog food. It must sit under the heading “Calorie Content.” It must show kcal per kilogram and kcal per cup.
Feeding directions must also state how much food to give per weight of the dog per unit of time. Those lines are a start, not a custom ration.
Write down the bag’s kcal per cup. Multiply by the cups you pour. Then add treats, chews, and table scraps.
The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention report notes that free-choice feeding and frequent treats remain common. That pattern can keep a dog “hungry” while calories still climb.
If the dog is gaining weight and still begging, the bowl is not empty. The extra calories are hiding in snacks.

Why “weight” on the bag is not the same as fewer calories
Marketing words are not calorie math. The Association of American Feed Control Officials sets a hard cap for a “lite” dry dog food. That cap is 3,100 kilocalories per kilogram.
Our research team compared two adult dry foods that talk about weight. Neither one sits under that lite cap.
Hill’s Science Diet Adult Perfect Weight Chicken & Brown Rice Recipe lists 3,189 kcal/kg. Hill’s also lists 298 kcal per eight-fluid-ounce cup. On a dry-matter basis, Hill’s lists 28.8% protein and 10.3% crude fiber.
Royal Canin Medium Weight Care lists 3,200 kcal/kg. Royal Canin also lists 256 kcal per cup on an as-fed, calculated basis. The guaranteed analysis shows 25.0% minimum crude protein and 12.5% maximum crude fiber.
Those two foods are complete-and-balanced adult formulas. They are not “lite” under that AAFCO descriptor rule.
A cup of the Hill’s formula still carries 42 more kilocalories than a cup of the Royal Canin formula. That gap is 16% more energy in the same household cup.
Hill’s publishes a U.S. feeding study on that Perfect Weight recipe. Hill’s says more than 70% of dogs lost weight within 10 weeks on that nutrition.
Royal Canin says 80% of slightly overweight dogs lost weight within two months on Medium Weight Care. Those are maker-published study claims. They do not replace a scale at home.
AAFCO also requires four basic guarantees. Those are minimum crude protein, minimum crude fat, maximum crude fiber, and maximum moisture.
Fiber can help a dog feel full. It does not cancel a high-fat cup.
Ingredients must appear in descending order by weight. A chicken meal near the top can raise protein.
