Size is the first filter, not brand
Cornell University’s Feline Health Center says larger cats need bigger boxes. The same page says to provide as many boxes as there are cats, plus one.
That n+1 rule is the quantity floor. Size is the fit floor. A short pan fails a long cat even if you own three of them.
Our research team compared five named models. Listed exterior length ran from 20.5 inches (Modkat Flip) to 24.4 inches (PETKIT Purobot Max 3).
Whisker’s page for Litter-Robot 4 lists a 22-by-27-inch footprint. A 21-inch box is the length that lets an adult cat turn. It is not a luxury add-on.
Cornell’s Feline Health Center also notes that kittens and elderly cats need boxes with low sides. Wall height and step height are different numbers. Do not treat them as the same.

What “large” means on maker pages
Whisker’s Litter-Robot 4 page lists cats from 3 to 25 pounds and up to four cats per unit. PetSafe’s ScoopFree SmartSpin page lists cats up to 25 pounds. PETKIT’s Purobot Max 3 page lists 3.3 to 22 pounds.
Those are weight caps, not body-length caps. A 12-pound cat can still be too long for a 16-inch pan.
Modkat’s XL page describes that box as built for larger cats and multi-cat homes. The listed exterior is 21.0 by 16.5 by 17.0 inches. That length is why it sits in this set.
Entry height decides who can use the box
Floor-to-entry height is the measurement most shoppers skip. It is also the measurement that blocks senior cats.
Comparing the five manufacturer pages, listed floor-to-entry height ran from 6.25 inches to 12 inches. The low end is the Modkat XL front opening. The high end is Litter-Robot 4 and ScoopFree SmartSpin.
The Modkat Flip page lists a floor-to-entry height of 6.75 inches. Its front opening is 8.25 by 9.5 inches. That is a step-in, not a hop-in.
PETKIT’s Purobot Max 3 page lists an entrance height of 8.03 inches. Whisker’s Litter-Robot 4 page lists a 15.75-by-15.75-inch entryway. The same page lists a 12-inch rise from floor to that opening.
A wide hole does not cancel a high step. A 15.75-inch circle still sits 12 inches off the floor on Litter-Robot 4.
PetSafe’s SmartSpin page says the unit sits just 12 inches from the ground. That is the same step class as Litter-Robot 4. It is not the same class as the two Modkat front entries.
Front entry versus top entry
Modkat’s XL page lists a top-entry width of 10.25 inches. It also lists a front opening of 8.3 by 9.8 inches. The same box can run as top-entry, front-entry, or both.
Top entry can cut tracking. It also adds a climb. Cornell’s Feline Health Center says elderly cats need low sides.
A top hole works against that note. Use top entry when the cat already jumps well. Use front entry when the cat is old, stiff, or short-legged.
Leave at least one open escape path in a multi-cat home. Cornell’s Feline Health Center warns that another pet can ambush a cat at the box. A single tunnel exit raises that risk.
Cleanup: scoop, liner, or sealed drawer
Cleanup style is the third filter. It does not override size or entry.
The two Modkat models are manual scoop boxes. Both maker pages say the reusable liner lasts up to three months. You still scoop the litter.
The liner is for dump-and-wash. It is not a pass to skip daily removal.

Modkat’s Flip page lists an empty weight of 7.0 pounds. Modkat’s XL page lists 9.0 pounds. Those two are the light units if you need to move a box.

Matching a box to the household
Start with one measurement of the cat. Use nose to tail base, not the tail plume. If that number is over 16 inches, drop any pan shorter than 20.5 inches.
Then measure the cat’s comfortable step. If the cat hesitates on a 6-inch stair, skip the 12-inch class. That removes Litter-Robot 4 and SmartSpin from the first buy.
If the cat clears an 8-inch step, PETKIT’s 8.03-inch entrance is the middle path. Whisker’s 15.75-inch circle is the widest listed hole here.

Cornell’s same page says homes with more than seven cats are likely to have spraying. It also states that 10% of neutered males and 5% of neutered females spray.
Extra boxes do not erase those rates. They cut competition at the pan.
Place boxes in more than one room. Cornell’s Feline Health Center says a cat may avoid a location after a bad event there. One closet with two boxes is still one location.
Odor and tracking, without extra claims
Whisker’s Litter-Robot 4 page describes a sealed drawer and a built-in carbon filter. PetSafe’s SmartSpin page claims 4 times better odor control than a traditional box.
PETKIT’s Purobot Max 3 page says its N50 unit “neutralizes up to 98%” of ammonia. Those are maker statements. Our research team did not measure ammonia.
