The Cup-and-Jaw Rule we used
A bag entered this article only if it passed three checks on the maker’s own page.
It had to list metabolizable energy per cup. It had to claim a small jaw, small bite, shredded small piece, or dachshund-shaped kibble. It also had to carry an adult-maintenance statement that cites the Association of American Feed Control Officials.

Why dachshund calories sit in a narrow band
The American Kennel Club official standard splits the breed by weight. Miniatures compete as 11 pounds and under at 12 months or older. Standard weight is usually 16 to 32 pounds.

Those two JAVMA figures are not the same study. Treat them as two published estimates, not one blended rate.
A lean waist is the practical target. Ribs should be easy to feel. A hanging belly is a feeding problem, not a sturdy look.

Purina lists 4,075 kcal per kilogram on a fed basis.
Royal Canin is the only dry food in this set whose product name is the breed. The page says the kibble is built for a pointed muzzle and a tiny jaw. It is labeled for purebred dachshunds 10 months and older.
Hill’s Perfect Weight Small Bites is the weight-control swap. Hill’s lists 10.3 percent crude fiber on a dry-matter basis. That sits far above Royal Canin’s 4.4 percent crude-fiber maximum.

The high-activity line for a 22-pound dog is 2 1/4 cups, or 186 grams. That is the top of Royal Canin’s published chart.
Hill’s Perfect Weight Small Bites splits the chart into weight loss and weight management. For a 10-pound dog, Hill’s lists 2/3 cup (65 grams) for loss. It lists 1 cup (100 grams) for management.
Royal Canin’s 97-gram medium scoop is a maintenance start. Hill’s 65-gram loss scoop is a cut.
Purina’s adult chart is coarser. Dogs from 3 to 12 pounds start at 1/2 to 1 cup, or 49 to 97 grams.

Royal Canin lists glucosamine at 520 mg per kilogram. It lists chondroitin sulfate at 5 mg per kilogram. Both lines are marked as not recognized as essential by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles.
Hill’s Perfect Weight Small Bites lists glucosamine at 583 ppm and chondroitin sulfate at 1,390 ppm. Purina lists glucosamine at 400 ppm. Those are label facts, not proof that a bag prevents a disk event.
Royal Canin also lists calcium at 0.6 percent minimum and phosphorus at 0.4 percent minimum. The page ties that pair to bone and joint support for short limbs. L-carnitine is listed at 70 mg per kilogram, again as a non-essential AAFCO nutrient.
