What published nutrition work says gerbils need
The Association of American Feed Control Officials does not publish a gerbil nutrient profile. AAFCO’s reading-labels page is clear on the scope.
Its Model Pet Food Regulations recognize dog nutrient profiles and cat nutrient profiles. They also recognize dog and cat feeding protocols.
AAFCO notes that FDA labeling rules apply to animal food that crosses state lines. A gerbil bag can still be legal and labeled. It cannot lean on an AAFCO gerbil profile that does not exist.
AAFCO lists 37 required nutrient specifications in its dog profiles and 44 in its cat profiles. None of those counts is a gerbil standard.
The National Research Council’s 1995 laboratory-animal edition does name gerbils. Adult Mongolian gerbils weigh about 70 to 135 grams.
Growing gerbils consume about 5 to 6 grams of dry diet a day. The same chapter also gives 8 to 10 grams of diet per 100 grams of body weight.
Dietary energy intake averages 36 to 40 kilocalories of gross energy per 100 grams of body weight per day. Voluntary water intake is 4 to 10 milliliters per 100 grams of body weight per day. Dry food still needs a water bottle.
On protein, the National Research Council reviewed growth trials. Weanlings gained about 1 gram a day on purified diets with 16 percent or more protein.
Gains fell to 0.6 to 0.8 grams a day at 12 to 14 percent protein. The chapter puts the growing-gerbil protein need near 16 percent when dietary fat is 2 to 5 percent.
The National Research Council also sets calcium at 5.0 grams per kilogram of diet. Phosphorus is 3.0 grams per kilogram. That is 0.50 percent calcium and 0.30 percent phosphorus, by analogy to the rat.
Magnesium is recommended at 1.5 grams per kilogram. Those 1995 figures are still the primary published targets.
Why pellets and seed mixes are not interchangeable
Gerbils sort. Sunflower seeds, peanuts, and fruit pieces go first.
Fortified crumbs stay behind. The leftover pile is not a balanced leftover. It is the part the gerbil declined.
Oxbow Animal Health’s February 2024 hamster and gerbil care guide sets a ratio. A uniform fortified food should make up about 75 percent of the daily diet.
The same guide tells owners to avoid mixes with nuts, corn, seeds, or fruit. Selective feeding, it says, can leave gaps.

The National Research Council’s intake for growing animals is 5 to 6 grams of dry diet a day. Several retail servings sit well above that gram figure.
Adult body size, hoarding, and leftover mix all change what actually gets eaten. Start with the maker’s gerbil line. Then watch body condition and leftover piles.
Oxbow’s switch plan is four weeks. Week one is one-quarter new food. Week two is half.
Week three is three-quarters. Week four is the new bag alone.
Kaytee’s switch plan is shorter. Mix old and new food for 7 to 10 days. Higgins uses the same 7 to 10 day window.

Oxbow’s care guide keeps fortified food at about 75 percent of the day. Mazuri caps supplemental items at 20 percent. Use the tighter of those two if you scatter seeds.
Oxbow lists oats, sunflower seeds, barley, cooked brown rice, and species-appropriate insects as treats. They are not the ration.
Offer them after the pellet is eaten. Do not let fruit become the meal.
Oxbow also says hamsters and gerbils do not require hay as a staple. Free-choice hay is still useful for hiding and nesting. That is enrichment, not a rabbit-style forage diet.
We left out treat sticks and hamster-only nuggets. We left out kitchen leftovers that no maker lists for gerbils.
