What a Soft-Food Label Actually Lists
The Food and Drug Administration says canned pet food is typically 75 to 78% moisture. Dry pet food, the FDA says, is typically 10 to 12% moisture.
Soft food sits in that wet band, or just below it in some refrigerated rolls. The point is water you can see and mash, not a crunchy pellet.
AAFCO’s model pet-food regulations cap declared moisture at 78.00% for most foods. Stew, gravy, sauce, broth, aspic, juice, or milk-replacer labels may go higher.
That is why a stew can list 82% moisture without breaking the usual cap. The extra water is part of the named form.
AAFCO also requires a guaranteed analysis on every pet-food label. The required lines are minimum crude protein, minimum crude fat, maximum crude fiber, and maximum moisture.
AAFCO’s labeling page lists eight required label items. Brand, species, and net quantity go on the front. Analysis, ingredients, adequacy, feeding directions, and the maker’s address complete the set.
The FDA notes that AAFCO published the first Dog Food Nutrient Profiles in 1991. Those profiles were last updated in 2016.
Guarantees are “as fed.” Water is still inside the percentage.
To compare a can with a fresh pack, subtract moisture from 100. Then divide the protein guarantee by that dry-matter figure.
