What horse pellets are, and what they are not
Horse bedding pellets are compressed wood fiber sold for stalls. They swell when wet. Then they crumble into damp sawdust.
That crumbling is the system. Urine does not form a clay clump. The wet pellet dies and the dry pellets stay intact.
Tractor Supply lists Pelletized Bedding for Horses and Small Animals as a 40 lb pine bag. The company describes compressed fibers that turn into sawdust when wet.
Guardian Horse Bedding lists a 40 lb bag with 0.95 cubic feet of pelletized pine fiber. The maker calls that fiber 100% softwood pine.
American Wood Fibers sells America’s Choice Bedding Pellets in 40 lb bags listed as 1 cubic foot. The company says the pellets are heat-dried and triple screened.
Those three bags are stall bedding, not cat-litter brands. They can still sit in a house box if the wood is heat-treated and the label names no stove additives.
Heating pellets are a different product. American Wood Fibers states that America’s Choice pellets are animal bedding, not a converted fuel pellet.
Small Pet Select states its Pelleted Pine Cat Litter is heat-treated. It also says the bag is free of toxins it associates with wood-stove pellets.
Forage pellets are horse feed, not bedding. Do not pour feed pellets into a litter box.
Our selection rule for this spec compare
We included a bag only if the maker lists wood fiber, a bag weight, and a bedding or litter use. The product also had to be sold now under a real brand name.
We excluded heating-stove pellets, forage feed pellets, clay, silica, tofu, and cedar-only bags. We also dropped any bag that hid the wood type or the intended use.
That rule is why the table mixes stall bags and litter bags.
If a maker omitted a number, we wrote “not listed.” We did not invent a fill depth or a lifespan.
What happens when urine hits a wood pellet
A dry pine pellet is dense. Liquid hits it, and the pellet swells and splits. The split fiber holds the urine.
Feline Pine describes the same action on its FAQ. The company says the pellets act like tiny sponges that absorb urine and break into sawdust.
Feline Pine tells owners to scoop solids daily, then shake the box. Intact pellets rise. Sawdust drops.
Leave that sawdust in place. Change the box when it is about 90% sawdust.

Guardian Horse Bedding says wet spots “actually clump” in a stall. In a cat box that wet mass is still broken fiber, not a clay clump.

Four of the six bags list a 40 lb size. That is the farm-store default.
The two stall bags that print volume sit 0.05 cubic feet apart. Guardian lists 0.95 cubic feet. American Wood Fibers lists 1 cubic foot.
None of the three stall bags publish a litter-box lifespan. Two of the three litter bags do.
Feline Pine says a 7 lb non-clumping bag lasts about 4 weeks. Healthy Pet says ökocat can last up to 7 weeks with regular scooping.
A 40 lb stall bag can last a long time in one box. The maker will not tell you when to dump it.

How to set up a pellet box
Use a box that can sift. Pellets stay on top. Sawdust falls through.
A standard clay scoop fights you. The slots are too fine, and the wet mash smears. Use a wide-slot pellet scoop or a double-tray sifter.
AAHA’s 2021 feline life-stage notes say the box should be at least 1.5 times the cat’s nose-to-tail length. Most store boxes fall short.
A large storage tote often fits that size rule better. AAHA also repeats the n+1 box rule.
Use one box per cat, plus one extra. Put boxes in quiet spots with an exit path.
Fill depth depends on the bag. Healthy Pet tells ökocat users to pour 2–3 inches into a clean box.
Feline Pine’s transition starts with 1 inch of new pellets under 1–2 inches of old litter. Do not stir that first layer. The cat mixes it.
For a stall bag with no fill number, start shallow. Two inches of dry pellets can bury waste. Deep beds waste dry pellets and hide wet spots.
Do not pre-soak a house box. American Wood Fibers says you may spray stall pellets and let them soften over a couple of days.
That stall trick makes a wet pad. Cats need a dry top layer.
Scoop solids every day. Shake or lift the sifter so sawdust drops. Add dry pellets only when the top looks thin.
Watch the change cue you actually have. Feline Pine’s 90% sawdust line is the clearest published dump point.
For a stall bag, dump when the tray is mostly mush and the pine smell is gone. AAHA says scoop daily and wash with hot water.
Skip soap and strong chemicals. Some cats refuse a scented box.

Hygiene, disposal, and leftover pellets
AAHA tells owners to scoop daily. That rule does not change because the fiber came from a horse stall.
Wash hands after you scoop. Bag the solids and seal the bag.
Do not flush pellet litter. Healthy Pet notes California law AB 2485 and asks owners not to flush litter or send it into gutters.
Used pine fiber can go in household trash. Keep it out of food gardens.
People sometimes dump leftover pellets on ice. Clay grit and wood fiber are not the same tool.
Wood pellets soak meltwater and crumble. They do not act like mineral grit.

Store unused bags dry. Small Pet Select says to store its pine litter in a dry place.

When horse pellets are the wrong litter
Skip this swap if the only cheap bag you can find is stove fuel. If the label talks about BTUs, ash, or a pellet stove, walk away.
Skip forage pellets. Feed is feed.
Skip the swap if your cat already avoids coarse textures. Hard cylinders are not soft clay.
Declawed cats and tender paws often reject the feel. We did not measure that pain. The texture is obvious on sight.
Skip a stall bag if you need a clumping scoop and you will not buy a sifter. You will fight wet mash every day.
Keep a clumping box in the mix if the household has a history of urinary trouble. AAHA notes that unscented clumping litter may be preferred in that setting.
Multi-cat homes still need more than one box. A 40 lb stall bag does not replace the second box.
Kittens may try to chew pellets. Sit with a new kitten during the first days. Remove the bag if you see eating.
If the cat stops using the box, stop the experiment. Put the old litter back.
