Quick answer: Keep an albino rabbit indoors with a dark hide. Shade every outdoor minute when the sun is up. Feed unlimited grass hay plus a limited timothy pellet, same as any house rabbit.
True albino pet rabbits lack iris melanin, so unshaded time at EPA UV Index 3 or higher can injure their eyes.
This page is a research-desk briefing on red eyes, indoor light, and sun, and we did not examine rabbits, run outdoor UV trials, or survey breeders.
Selection rule: we covered only indoor pet rabbits with a white coat and pink or red eyes. We left out Himalayan and Californian colorpoints, meat-hutch systems, and ranked product lists. A product entered the table only if its maker page listed a shade, floor-space, or hay-first diet attribute we could copy.
Why the eyes look red
Red eyes are not a dye. They are blood vessels seen through an unpigmented iris.
A 2021 Italian Journal of Animal Science paper sequenced the tyrosinase gene in 25 domestic rabbits from 11 breeds, plus 11 wild rabbits. The team reported 15 polymorphisms. One missense change, p.T373K, marked the albino allele.
That enzyme step makes melanin. Without it, fur stays white and the iris stays clear. Light then reflects off vessels, so the eye reads pink or red.
Colorpoint rabbits are a different allele. Himalayan and Californian rabbits keep pigment on the points.
They usually have dark eyes. They are not this page’s subject.
What albino vision can and cannot do
An albino rabbit is not blind. The eye still forms an image.
Melanin normally tints the iris and the back of the eye. That pigment cuts glare.
Without it, bright light floods the retina. The rabbit may squint, freeze, or sway its head before a hop.
That sway is a scan, not a seizure. Prey animals already check a wide field. An unpigmented eye just needs more samples of the same scene.
Depth cues can be weaker. So can contrast in harsh noon light. Dim indoor rooms often suit them better than a sunlit patio.
Do not read red eyes as illness by default. Sudden redness, discharge, or a shut lid is a different problem. That needs a clinic, not a brighter lamp.
The Shade-First Rule
Our research team compared public UV bands with published housing sizes. We call the result the Shade-First Rule.
The rule has three controls. Keep an indoor base and an opaque hide. Skip unshaded outdoor time when the EPA UV Index is 3 or higher.
The EPA SunWise scale is a joint EPA and National Weather Service tool. It lists 2 or less as low and 3 to 5 as moderate.
It lists 6 to 7 as high. It lists 8 to 10 as very high, and 11 or above as extreme.
Index 3 is the first band where the EPA tells people to plan protection. An unpigmented iris has less of that protection built in. So we treat 3 as the outdoor shade line, not 8.
The Merck Veterinary Manual’s pet-owner rabbit page sets a heat line too. Long spells above 80°F (27°C) can make rabbits sick. The same page says domestic rabbits do poorly below 50°F (10°C).
Pink ear skin burns faster than a dark coat. White fur does not replace shade. A mesh run in open noon sun fails the rule even if the air feels cool.
Window glass cuts some UV. It does not make a south window a sunbed. Park the pen out of the brightest pane.
Indoor space that actually blocks glare
House Rabbit Society’s housing page wants a sleep area at least 4 times the rabbit’s size. It wants 4 or more hours of hard play each day.
It names a 4 ft by 4 ft exercise pen as a common start. That footprint is 16 square feet.
MidWest Homes for Pets lists the Critterville Small Animal Exercise Pen as 8 epoxy-coated panels. The maker prints more than 10 square feet of space. Bar spacing is 1 inch.
Our research team compared those two published figures. The Critterville pen is about 6 square feet short of the House Rabbit Society 4 by 4 start. Use it as a room, not as the whole life.
The Merck Veterinary Manual lists minimum cage footprints by size. Medium to large breeds get at least 24 by 30 inches (61 by 76 centimeters).
Open-pen sides should be at least 4 feet (1.2 meters) high. Indoor cages should be spot-cleaned daily and washed weekly.
A hide must block light, not just mark a corner. Kaytee’s Igloo Hideout page lists Mini, Large, and Giant sizes.
Kaytee also calls the plastic translucent so you can see the pet. That is a rest dome, not a sun shield.
Cardboard, a covered box, or a solid-sided nest does the glare job better. Put the dark box inside the pen. Leave a second exit so the rabbit is not trapped.
If you take the pen outside, add a solid roof. Watch the EPA index before you open the door. Bring the rabbit in at the first squint.
Diet is not a special albino menu
White fur does not change the gut. Hay still runs the system.
House Rabbit Society’s diet page sets adult maintenance as unlimited grass hay. It adds a minimum of 2 cups of chopped vegetables per 6 lbs of body weight per day.
It adds 1/4 cup of pellets per 6 lbs of body weight per day. It wants 18% minimum fiber on a good pellet.
Oxbow Animal Health lists Essentials Adult Rabbit Food at 14.00% minimum crude protein. Crude fiber is listed at 25.00% to 29.00%. Vitamin A is listed at 10,000 IU/kg minimum.
For a 4 to 8 lb rabbit, Oxbow prints 1/4 to 1/3 cup daily beside unlimited grass hay. The maker’s switch plan runs 4 weeks.
Small Pet Select lists the same 14% protein floor on its Rabbit Food Pellets page. Fiber is the same 25% to 29% band. Calcium is 0.4% minimum and 0.6% maximum.
Vitamin A is listed as 8,650 IU/lb maximum. For ages 1 to 5 years, Small Pet Select prints 1/4 to 1/2 cup per 6 lbs.
Supreme Petfoods lists Science Selective House Rabbit Food for indoor adults aged 20 weeks and up. The guaranteed analysis is 12.0% minimum protein and 19.0% to 24.0% crude fiber.
A 5.5 lb adult is directed to 2 to 2.5 oz per day. The U.S. bag size on that page is 3.3 lb.
Comparing those published specs, Oxbow and Small Pet Select both sit above House Rabbit Society’s 18% fiber line by a wide margin. Science Selective still clears 18% at its 19% minimum. None of the three bags replace hay.
Oxbow Western Timothy Hay lists 7.00% minimum protein and 32.00% maximum crude fiber. Moisture is listed at 15.00% maximum.
Bags run from 15 oz to 50 lb. That is the diet base. The pellet is the measured top-up.
House Rabbit Society also tells owners to wash vegetables for at least 2 minutes because of RHDV2. Fruit stays at about 1 teaspoon per 2 lbs of body weight per day.

Grooming a white coat without extra sun
White fur shows urine stain, hay dust, and shed faster than a dark coat. The rabbit still grooms itself.
The Merck Veterinary Manual says short-haired rabbits should be brushed at least twice a week. Long-haired rabbits need daily work. Extra brushing during a molt cuts swallowed hair.
Do that job indoors. A “quick outdoor brush” at noon breaks the Shade-First Rule.
