Why housing guides keep repeating 15 inches
A wheel is one tool inside a larger enclosure. Cage size still comes first.
VCA Animal Hospitals sets a minimum of 3 feet by 2 feet by 3 feet for one chinchilla. It sets 3 feet by 2 feet by 5 feet for a pair.
PetMD, updated February 28, 2025, sets a different floor. It says a single chinchilla needs at least 2 feet by 2 feet by 4 feet.
LafeberVet goes larger still. It lists minimal cage dimensions of 80 inches by 50 inches by 80 inches.
Those three figures do not match. They do agree on one point. An adult chinchilla needs a tall, multi-level cage before it needs a wheel.
Heat is the other published constraint. PetMD sets 55 to 70 F and says the room should never exceed 80 F.
VCA Animal Hospitals lists 10 to 20 C as the comfort band. It also wants humidity below 40 to 50 percent.
LafeberVet says chinchillas thrive at 18 to 22 C, or 64 to 72 F.
