The Pet Bench Wood-or-Pumice Rule
We used one selection rule. The maker page had to list untreated apple wood, willow, or pumice as the chew surface.
The same page also had to name chinchilla as a target species.
We excluded exercise wheels, dust baths, hammocks, and salt licks. We also excluded any SKU whose page listed cedar, plywood, or a soft plastic chew face.

Why chinchillas gnaw wood and pumice
VCA Animal Hospitals states that chinchilla teeth are open-rooted. They grow 2 to 3 inches, or 5 to 7.5 centimeters, each year.
VCA also lists the tooth count. Each side has one upper incisor and one lower incisor. It also has four upper cheek teeth and four lower cheek teeth.
Those teeth must meet in a precise bite. If they do not, they fail to wear. VCA calls that mismatch malocclusion.
The Merck Veterinary Manual, in its September 2025 owner chapter, says the teeth grow constantly. Without enough hay, they can overgrow and impact the jaws.
Merck is blunt about pellets. Pellets crumble. They do not wear teeth the way hay does.
Chinchillas that eat mostly pellets are more likely to have dental problems. Merck still lists wooden blocks as a daily chew, not as a hay substitute.
The care checklist says to replace chew toys as needed. It also says to give fresh hay every day.
Hay does the grinding work on the cheek teeth. Wood and pumice give the incisors a hard face to attack.
Both jobs matter. Neither replaces the other.
This is not a puppy’s short teething window. Puppy teething toys use rubber for a few months.

A loose apple stick is a portable twig. A chinchilla can carry it, hide it, or ignore it.

Put a wire-mount ledge where the chinchilla already jumps. Kaytee’s page says the Lava Ledge encourages jumping.

Drop loose sticks on a dry shelf, not in the litter corner. Thin 4-inch sticks vanish into bedding.
Prevue tells owners to inspect toys every day. Use that default for every SKU in this table.
