PDSA, writing in December 2024, says most shop cages fail basic needs. It cites the Veterinary Association for Animal Welfare in Germany. That group states a minimum cage of 100 by 50 centimeters.
That floor is 5,000 square centimeters. In American units it is about 775 square inches. PDSA calls this a minimum.
PDSA prefers a large single level over a tall cage. Hamsters have poor eyesight. They can fall from high platforms.
A DIY hamster cage can meet that floor. Accessories do not invent missing inches.
PDSA also wants a secure lid. Hamsters escape through weak doors.
Place the home in a quiet room. PDSA lists a steady 18 to 21 degrees Celsius. That range is about 64 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
Keep the box away from drafts and direct sun. Noise and vibration stress hamsters.
PDSA says hamsters typically live two to three years. The enclosure has to work for that span.
Wheels: diameter and a solid track
PDSA says many hamster wheels are too small. A small wheel forces a curved back.
The running surface must be solid. Slats and bars can trap legs.
PDSA lists a minimum of 20 centimeters, or 8 inches, for dwarf hamsters. It lists at least 30 centimeters, or 12 inches, for Syrian hamsters.

Bottom height adjusts from 1 inch to 4 inches. That range matters when bedding is deep.

Bedding volume that actually reaches 10 inches
PDSA requires no less than 25 centimeters, or 10 inches, of bedding. Hamsters sleep, hide, and store food in burrows.
The material must hold a tunnel. PDSA lists paper-based bedding as safe on its own.
PDSA warns against scented bedding. It also warns against cotton wool, kapok, and bamboo fluff.
Those fibers can wrap a leg. They can block a gut if eaten.
Kaytee’s Clean & Cozy White page calls the paper 99.9 percent dust-free. It also calls the paper fragrance-free.
Kaytee states it absorbs up to 6 times its weight in liquid. That figure is a maker claim, not our soak test.
Kaytee lists three bag volumes on that page. 24.6 liters equals 1,500 cubic inches. 49.2 liters equals 3,000 cubic inches.
The 85-liter bag equals 5,187 cubic inches. Our research team divided those volumes by a 775-square-inch floor.
One 24.6-liter bag yields about 1.9 inches of depth. One 49.2-liter bag yields about 3.9 inches. One 85-liter bag yields about 6.7 inches.
A 10-inch layer on that floor needs about 7,750 cubic inches. That is about 5.2 bags of 24.6 liters. Or about 1.5 bags of 85 liters.
Those bag counts are arithmetic from Kaytee’s cubic-inch labels and PDSA’s floor. They are not a lab result.

Door diameter on Large is about 2.7 inches. Niteangel wrote that size for Syrian hamsters.
Small measures 12.4 by 8 by 3.3 inches. Door diameter is about 2.1 inches. Niteangel wrote that size for dwarf hamsters.
Both versions have 2 doors and 6 rooms. Niteangel splits those rooms into 3 large and 3 small.
The hide has no floor. The hamster can dig through it. The lid lifts off so you can check a food cache.
Niteangel lists European birch plywood. Joints are tongue-and-groove. The page says there are no nails.
Our research team multiplied the Large footprint. 16.9 by 11.2 inches is about 189 square inches. That is about 24 percent of a 775-square-inch floor.
Plan the wheel corner first. Then place the hide.
Optional stilts on that page are 4.33 inches or 5.9 inches high. Use them only if bedding fills the gap.
PDSA wants constant water in a bottle with a metal spout. We did not name a bottle brand here.
PDSA says teeth grow for life. Untreated softwood belongs on its chew list after a wash and a one-hour low-heat bake.

A Syrian setup that follows PDSA uses a 12-inch-class solid drum. Pair it with the Large hide. Add enough Clean & Cozy White to reach 10 inches.
A dwarf setup can use the 10-inch Niteangel drum and the Small hide. Bedding depth stays at 10 inches. Floor size stays at 100 by 50 centimeters.
PDSA does not shrink the floor for a smaller species.
What a complete setup still skips
Tube kits add path length. They do not add continuous floor. Our rule dropped them.
Exercise balls close a hamster in a sealed sphere. PDSA does not list a ball on its toy page.
Wire-rung wheels fail PDSA’s solid-surface line. They stay out.
Scented paper fails PDSA’s airway warning. Fluffy nest fiber fails its wrap-and-blockage warning.
A second hamster is not an accessory. PDSA says most species must live alone.
Decor that eats floor without adding a nest or a wheel is optional. Buy it last.
