A DIY hamster cage is not a weekend craft. It is a homemade enclosure that has to survive a nocturnal rodent with continuously growing teeth, a need to burrow, and a talent for finding the one gap you did not measure. This page is a safety explainer for the five classes people actually build: a modified storage bin, an aquarium or tank conversion, an IKEA Detolf-style glass cabinet, a homemade wooden box, and a C&C (cubes-and-coroplast) pen.
We are a research desk, not a veterinary practice. We did not build a fleet of bins, and we will not invent a workshop trial. Every measurement below is a published figure we fetched, or a length and width you take yourself with a tape. If you would rather buy a finished enclosure than convert furniture, use the live Syrian hamster cage guide. That page is the shopping sibling. This one asks whether a homemade box will actually hold up.
“Hold up” here means the failure modes that show up in real houses: ventilation, chew-through, bar or grid spacing, escape, heat, a lid that has to survive a cat or a dog, and a floor that has to be solid. It does not mean the build looked good on social media.
Measure the floor. Do not guess the bin.
This is not a size explainer. The live cage guide is where finished habitats are compared. The only floor job on a DIY page is this: measure the unbroken length and width of the floor the hamster will actually run on, then compare that rectangle to the figures the welfare pages print. Extra levels, shelves, tubes, and wheel stands do not count. HamsterWelfare says the 100 × 50 × 50 cm figure is unbroken floor space, not stacked platforms.
What the fetched pages print – and what they do not:
- HamsterWelfare (cage-advice page we fetched) prints a minimum of 100 × 50 × 50 cm (L × W × H), which they convert as 5,000 cm² (775 in²) of unbroken floor, for all species including dwarfs. They attribute that to Germany’s Veterinary Association for Animal Welfare (TVT).
- PDSA prints the same 100 × 50 cm floor as a minimum, citing the same German association, and says bigger is always better. PDSA does not print a square-inch conversion on that page. It names an extra-large cage, a glass tank, or a homemade enclosure.
- Blue Cross prints housing no smaller than 100 cm × 50 cm floor space, by 50 cm tall, and calls tanks or aquariums ideal if they have a mesh lid. Gaps between bars or mesh should be less than 1 cm.
- PETA prints at least 800 square inches of floor space, or a 75-gallon aquarium with a fitted mesh lid, for one Syrian hamster or one or two dwarf hamsters.
- The RSPCA environment page does not print a square-inch minimum. It asks for a suitable home-cage with a thick layer of bedding, a solid floor, and enough depth to dig. It does not say “600 square inches.” We are not going to write that number in for them.
If your tape says the unbroken floor is shorter or narrower than those published rectangles, the DIY class does not become large enough because it was cheap or because it has a second level. Measure L × W. Then decide whether you are building, or shopping.
Shop cages are useful as a contrast, not as a target. Kaytee lists the Crittertrail 2-Level Habitat at 11.5 × 20 × 16 in. Those are maker exterior dimensions, not a floor we measured and not a test we ran. Treating 11.5 × 20 in as the footprint gives 230 square inches – far under HamsterWelfare’s 775 in² conversion and PETA’s 800 square inches. PDSA’s opening line on cages is that most hamster cages sold in shops are not big enough. A DIY build that copies a shop footprint has already failed the only measurement this page asks you to take.
The five classes, in one table
Use this as a first filter. The sections after the table explain the failure modes. None of these rows is a build recipe.

Buy ready in that last column means a finished enclosure that already clears the printed floor and bedding depth – the job of the Syrian hamster cage guide – not a CritterTrail-class shop cage with more levels.
Modified storage bin
A bin cage is a storage tote with a ventilated lid and enough unbroken floor to stop being a storage tote. It is the budget class. It is also the class most likely to be a too-small box with holes poked in the lid.
HamsterWelfare lists converting a large plastic box as a budget DIY class. PDSA lists a homemade enclosure as a housing type. Neither page prints a bin size. We are not going to print “a 110-quart bin is 775 square inches.” We did not fetch a primary interior measurement for a named tote, and we will not invent one. If you are holding a bin, measure the inside length and the inside width of the floor – the flat rectangle, not the rim, not the label, not the volume in quarts. Compare that rectangle to HamsterWelfare’s 100 × 50 cm / 775 in² conversion and to PETA’s 800 square inches. If the tape loses, the bin loses.
What has to hold up:
- Chew-through. RSPCA’s environment page says hamsters quickly dig burrows and can escape from poorly constructed cages. Thin lid plastic, a snapped rim, a cable-tie hole, and a chewed corner are all poorly constructed cages. PETA says plastic accessories are generally acceptable as long as the hamster does not chew them. If the hamster can reach a raw plastic edge, assume they will test it.
- Ventilation versus a sealed tub. RSPCA prefers a cage with stainless steel bars or mesh sides to one with solid sides, and it wants a raised lid. A storage bin is the opposite shape: solid walls, and a lid people want to close so the cat stays out. Blue Cross, writing about tanks, still wants a mesh lid so air can move. The honest trade-off is enough open mesh that the air actually moves, and every opening has to be a gap the hamster cannot enlarge with their teeth. We are not going to publish a hole-count or a drill-bit recipe we did not test.
- Lid versus predators. PDSA: secure lid and doors; hamsters are fantastic escape artists. PETA’s tank advice is a fitted mesh lid. A bin with no lid is a snack tray for a cat. A bin with a solid lid and two tiny holes is a stale-air box. The lid has to do both jobs. The printed pages do not give a cat-proofing spec. They give “secure.” Treat other pets as part of that word.
- Heat. PDSA wants the home kept at a steady 18–21°C, away from draughts and direct sunlight, and warns that a hamster who cannot escape the heat can develop heatstroke. A dark plastic tub in a sunny room is a poor match for that sentence. PETA’s band is 65–75°F. Those are not the same band. Print both; do not average them into a fake ideal.
- Floor. RSPCA: solid floor, not wire mesh, because mesh can lead to foot problems. A bin already has a solid floor. Do not “improve” it with a wire platform that becomes the walking surface.
A bin that clears the published floor, holds PDSA’s 25 cm / 10 in of bedding (Blue Cross prints 20 cm; PETA prefers 8 in or more), and still has room for a solid Syrian wheel is a serious enclosure.
Aquarium or tank conversion
PDSA lists a glass tank as one of the three housing types it wants you to consider, next to an extra-large cage and a homemade enclosure. Blue Cross calls tanks or aquariums ideal because they hold deep bedding and reduce bar-escape risk, and still wants a mesh lid. PETA is more specific: a 75-gallon aquarium with a fitted mesh lid would make a suitable home for one Syrian or one or two dwarfs, or else aim for at least 800 square inches. Those are published options. They are not a reason to skip the tape.
Measure the glass floor. A gallon rating is a volume, not a running rectangle. This desk will not invent the length and width of a 75-gallon tank. Different 75-gallon footprints exist. A short, tall tank can hold a lot of water and still lose on unbroken floor. A long, low tank can clear the floor and still lose on bedding depth if the glass is only eight inches high and you need ten inches of substrate plus a wheel.
Honest failure modes for glass:
- Solid sides versus air. This is the one place the charities do not sing from the same sheet. RSPCA’s environment page says a cage with stainless steel bars or mesh sides is preferable to one with solid sides. PDSA, Blue Cross, and PETA are willing to house a hamster in glass. We are not going to pick a winner. We are going to say: if you use a tank, the lid is the lung. PETA’s wording is a fitted mesh lid, not a glass canopy. Blue Cross wants the same mesh lid, with gaps under 1 cm.
- Falls. PDSA says single-level, larger cages tend to be better than multi-level, tall cages, because hamsters have poor eyesight and can fall from heights. A deep tank with 10 in of bedding is a burrow. A tank with stacked platforms and a long drop to glass is the warning.
- Escape at the rim. Silicone gaps, a sliding top that does not latch, and a mesh that only rests on the frame are poorly constructed cages in RSPCA’s language. The hamster needs a corner, not a door.
Glass does not chew. That is the real advantage. The costs are weight, heat, and the temptation to treat a small starter tank as if PETA had endorsed it. They endorsed a 75-gallon aquarium or 800 square inches—and they still want the mesh lid.
IKEA Detolf-style
‘Detolf-style’ means a long, low glass display cabinet or a similar furniture shell converted into a hamster run. HamsterWelfare’s cage-advice page lists a DIY IKEA Detolf at 163 cm × 42 cm (6,845 cm²) and marks it discontinued, second-hand only. The same page lists other cabinet and desk conversions (Platsa, Komplement, Pax, Linnmon) with their own printed rectangles. Those figures are HamsterWelfare’s listings, not tape we ran in this room.
The honest failure mode is the short side. HamsterWelfare’s own minimum is 100 × 50 cm of unbroken floor. A Detolf at 163 × 42 cm wins on area (6,845 cm² versus 5,000 cm²) and loses on width (42 cm versus 50 cm). A long, skinny runway is not the same welfare object as a 100 × 50 cm rectangle. Measure both sides. Do not let a large square-centimetre number hide a 42 cm squeeze.
Other ways this class fails:
- Second-hand glass. HamsterWelfare says the Detolf is discontinued. A used cabinet can have a cracked pane, a warped runner, or a missing back.
- Lid and sliding doors. Display cabinets were built to show figurines. Sliding glass a hamster can rattle, or a top that was never meant to take mesh, is an escape. PDSA wants a secure lid. A cat on a glass shelf is a predator problem the furniture designer did not model.
- Chew points move. HamsterWelfare likes no-bar set-ups because there is nothing to bar-bite and you can add bedding depth. The chew points move to silicone, vinyl seals, and any wood or particle-board edge the hamster can reach.
- Heat. A glass box in a sunny bay is still a glass box. PDSA’s 18–21°C and ‘away from direct sunlight’ apply to furniture hacks the same way they apply to tanks.
If the cabinet you can actually buy does not measure at least as generously as the published floors—in both length and width—this class is a style, not a home.
Homemade wooden
This is the class we have to be least romantic about.
RSPCA’s hamster-environment page is not ambiguous: ‘Plastic cages are better than metal, but wooden cages shouldn’t be used.’ That is the national environment page, fetched for this draft. We are not going to publish a cut-list that pretends we did not read that sentence.
PDSA mentions a homemade enclosure as a housing type, and names multi-chambered hamster-safe wooden hides as nest boxes. A hide is not a cage. Wooden toys sit inside a washable box. A wooden box that is the cage has to absorb urine, survive nightly gnawing, and still be something you can clean. Those are the jobs wood is bad at.
If someone is still looking at a wooden DIY, the failure modes in the fetched pages are:
- Chew-through and escape. RSPCA: hamsters can escape easily from poorly constructed cages; their teeth never stop growing (RSPCA hamster fact file). A pine corner, an MDF seam, and a decorative trim become holes.
- A floor that is not solid in the way RSPCA means. Solid means a continuous, washable walking surface that can hold bedding. RSPCA tells you to avoid wire mesh floors because they can lead to foot problems. A wooden slat floor is not a loophole.
- Damp. RSPCA wants no draughts or damp, and dry bedding. Urine in untreated wood is damp you cannot scoop. PDSA’s fuller clean includes rinsing and drying the enclosure. Wood that cannot be rinsed is a hygiene problem wearing furniture language.
- Heat and air. A sealed wooden cube with a heavy lid and 10 in of bedding is a humidity box. Pair that with PDSA’s heatstroke warning and RSPCA’s preference for mesh sides.
The research-desk position is: this class exists, people build it, and the charity that writes the UK environment page tells you not to use wooden cages. We will not invent a pet-safe sealed-plywood specification we did not fetch. If you want a wooden look without making the walls out of wood, that is a shopping problem for the Syrian cage guide, not a reason to ignore RSPCA.
C&C—cubes and coroplast
C&C means a grid of storage-cube wires with a coroplast (corrugated plastic) base. Guinea-pig keepers use it because it scales. Hamster keepers copy it because it looks large on a bedroom floor. We did not fetch a hamster-specific grid-gap standard, so we will not invent one.
What the pages we have actually support:
- Measure the unbroken plastic floor. Cube count is not floor space. HamsterWelfare’s 100 × 50 cm / 775 in² and PETA’s 800 square inches are unbroken floors. Levels do not count.
- Bar spacing and escape. PDSA: hamsters are fantastic escape artists. HamsterWelfare’s unsuitable list includes cages that are easily escapable. Grids sold for guinea pigs are not automatically safe for a hamster’s head or a Syrian’s limb. If a snout or a leg can pass, the grid is wrong. Measure the opening. If you cannot swear the hamster cannot get through it or get stuck in it, this class has already failed.
- Mesh versus solid floor. RSPCA: the cage floor should be solid; avoid wire mesh floors because they can lead to foot problems. HamsterWelfare lists barred flooring as a route to bumblefoot. A C&C that uses the grid as the walking surface—even with a thin fleece—is the thing those sentences are about. The hamster stands on solid plastic, fully.
- Chew-through. Coroplast cuts, taped seams, and zip-tie holes are raw edges. A hamster who can reach the top of a low coroplast wall will test it.
- Lids and household predators. Open-top C&C is normal in guinea-pig rooms. It is not normal in a house with a cat or a dog. PDSA wants a secure lid. PETA’s tank analogue is a fitted mesh lid. A hamster can also climb grids. An open pen is not a cage.
- Bedding depth. PDSA wants at least 25 cm / 10 in of bedding that holds a burrow. PETA prefers 8 in or more. A shallow coroplast tray with a pretty grid is a shop tray with extra wire. The base walls have to be tall enough for that depth and still leave a lid the hamster cannot walk off.
C&C holds up when the floor is a measured rectangle, the walls are taller than a burrow, the grid cannot pass a hamster, the walking surface is solid, and the top is closed in a house that has other animals. It fails when it is a guinea-pig pen with a hamster in it.
Failure modes that apply to every class
Ventilation. RSPCA wants mesh sides and a raised lid, and wants the cage away from ultrasound (televisions, computer screens, vacuum cleaners, running water) and away from draughts. PDSA wants 18–21°C and no draughts. Those jobs fight each other in a DIY box: you need air moving, and you need the hamster not sitting in a window blast. Solid-wall classes make the lid do all the breathing. An almost-closed lid leaves damp bedding and stale air. A wide-open grid the hamster can chew solves air and creates escape. No fetched charity page prints a hole-count recipe.
Chew-through. A hamster’s incisors do not stop growing. RSPCA’s hamster fact file is explicit, and names gnawing as the thing that wears them down. PDSA wants things to chew: untreated softwood branches (washed and baked), cardboard, safe woods. That is enrichment, and a warning: they will chew the enclosure if it is made of the same stuff as the toys. Inspect every reachable edge—rim, lid clip, silicone corner, grid tie, wooden trim.
Bar spacing, limbs, and heads. We did not fetch a universal DIY bar-spacing number, and we will not mint one. Kaytee lists 0.29 in bar spacing on the Crittertrail 2-Level; that is a maker spec on a shop cage listed at 11.5 × 20 × 16 in, not a DIY standard. The welfare test is behavioural: can this hamster squeeze through, get a limb stuck, or trap a foot on a mesh floor? HamsterWelfare treats ‘easily escapable’ and ‘barred flooring’ as reasons a cage is unsuitable.
Escape, lids, cats, and dogs. PDSA’s cage list starts with a large floor and then, immediately, a secure lid and doors. PETA’s aquarium is useless without the fitted mesh lid. RSPCA wants the cage secure, with a raised lid. A lid is doing three jobs: keep the hamster in, keep the cat, the dog, and a toddler out, and let air move. A baking sheet fails air. An open C&C and an unclipped bin fail containment. A decorative roof with no latch fails the first time a dog leans.
Mesh floor versus solid floor. Not a taste question. RSPCA: solid floor so bedding can absorb the small amount of urine hamsters produce; avoid wire mesh floors because they can lead to foot problems. HamsterWelfare: barred flooring can lead to bumblefoot. If your DIY uses a grid as the floor, put a solid base in. Fleece over wire is still wire.
Heat, cold, and where the box sits. PDSA: 18–21°C, no draughts, no direct sunlight; heatstroke if too hot; torpor if too cold. PETA: 65–75°F. RSPCA: indoors, no draughts or damp, predictable light, not in bright sun, and away from ultrasound. A glass or plastic DIY in a sunny window can hit the hot end in an afternoon. A garage can hit the cold end overnight. RSPCA also wants a quiet place where the hamster can rest undisturbed. A cabinet in the TV room fails the ultrasound line and the quiet line at once.
The box still has to hold a burrow and a wheel
A DIY class that clears the published floor and then cannot hold the bedding or the wheel is still a failed box.
PDSA wants at least 25 cm / 10 in of bedding so the hamster can burrow, sleep, and store food, in a material that holds its structure. PETA prefers 8 in or more, and notes that wild tunnel systems can run more than 2 feet deep. HamsterWelfare says a hamster could start to burrow in about 6 in, and that a 10 in (25 cm) section is more suitable. Those are not the same number. The shared rule is deep and structured, not a dusting on the floor. For what actually holds a tunnel, use the hamster bedding guide for burrowing—then put that depth in a box tall enough to take it.
The wheel is why the box cannot be a low tray. PDSA: at least 30 cm / 12 in for a Syrian, 20 cm / 8 in for a dwarf, solid running surface, no slats or bars. PETA: 11 in minimum for Syrians, 9 in for dwarfs, solid. HamsterWelfare’s cage-advice page talks about fitting at least a 28 cm wheel for a Syrian and 20 cm for a dwarf, and says a cage that cannot fit an adequate wheel is unsuitable. If you need a quiet, large, solid wheel for the box you just measured, the large silent hamster wheel guide is the sibling page. This draft will not duplicate it.
PDSA also wants nest boxes; hamsters spend most of the day asleep. RSPCA wants a nesting box large enough to sleep, store food, and move around, preferably without a floor so you can lift it. A DIY that is all wheel and no hide is not finished.
Syrian hamsters live alone. That is PDSA, PETA, and RSPCA in different words. A large DIY is not a reason to house two Syrians. PETA’s 75-gallon line is for one Syrian, or one or two dwarfs; PDSA still does not want domesticated Russian dwarfs housed together.

Print this. Tape it to the bin, the tank, or the cabinet before you cut anything. Fill in the numbers from your tape.

Frequently asked questions
Is a DIY hamster cage kinder than a shop cage? It can be. PDSA says most shop cages are not big enough and names a glass tank or a homemade enclosure as the larger alternatives. A DIY that loses on unbroken floor is not kinder. Measure L × W before you congratulate the build.
Can I start in a small bin and upgrade later? The hamster lives in whatever you put them in tonight. None of the fetched pages describe a starter cage as a welfare step. HamsterWelfare’s cage-advice page treats a floor under 100 × 50 cm as the main reason a cage is unsuitable. Build or buy the measured rectangle first.
Do I need a lid if I do not have a cat? PDSA still wants a secure lid and doors because hamsters escape. A lid also stops a jump from a tall C&C wall and stops a visiting dog you did not plan for. PETA’s aquarium wording is a fitted mesh lid, not “a lid if you have predators.”
Are wooden DIY cages ever all right? RSPCA’s environment page says wooden cages shouldn’t be used. PDSA allows wooden hides inside a cage, not as a substitute for that sentence. We are not going to write a workaround that the environment page does not print.
Can two hamsters share a large DIY? Syrians, no – PDSA, PETA, and RSPCA all treat Syrian hamsters as solitary. PDSA also tells you not to house domesticated Russian dwarfs together. A bigger box is not a social licence.
What we cut rather than guess
- No “we built 12 bins” and no workshop trial we did not run.

If the tape loses, do not cut the plastic. If the lid cannot do air and predators at the same time, the class is wrong. If the only way the box holds up is on a social-media thumbnail, it does not hold up.
