Senior is a veterinary life-stage conversation, not a box brand. AAFCO’s consumer page lists recognized life stages as gestation/lactation, growth, maintenance, and all life stages. Senior is not on that list. AVMA: “It’s important to remember that age is not a disease.” A 2025 Frontiers in Veterinary Science paper (German, Melgoza, and Torres-Henderson) cites the 2019 AAHA definition of senior as the last 25% of estimated lifespan. Large dogs reach that window earlier than small dogs. Do not start a subscription because a carton asked for a birth year.

This URL is the overlap of two objects: an older dog, and a recurring way to buy food. It is not a top-N senior box list.

The selection rule for this page only:

1. Confirm the dog is a shopping problem. Weight, teeth, kidneys, and heart are clinic questions.
2. Read the AAFCO nutritional adequacy statement on the food you will actually feed. Complete and balanced for adult maintenance or all life stages. Treats and “intermittent or supplemental” lines fail before price is interesting.
3. Then ask whether a subscription is the cheapest or most reliable way to buy that same food. Maker autoship, a grocer refill, or a marketplace Subscribe & Save are delivery. They do not change the statement on the bag.

Desk stat: 2 of 4 grocery tiles print a calorie-per-cup number on the pages we opened (Royal Canin 308; Bright Mind 423). Bright Mind is 115 kcal/cup higher than Small Aging 12+ on those two reprints. That is a measuring-cup trap, not a quality medal. 1 of 4 prints a feeding-test sentence. 1 of 4 prints a 5% maker autoship.

Desk stat: 0 of 4 direct plans print a senior nutrient profile. 3 of 4 print formulated-to-meet all life stages including growth of large-size dogs (70 lb+). Nom Nom at 201 kcal/cup and Ollie Fresh Beef at 376 kcal/cup are not the same cup. That 175 kcal gap is why “a cup of fresh” is not a unit. First: is this dog a senior on a veterinarian’s exam?

The rule starts at the clinic, not at checkout.

What the exam is for, on this page:

• Weight and body condition. WSAVA body-condition and muscle-condition tools exist because fat and muscle can move in opposite directions. AAHA 2021: owner scoring at home is useful only if a veterinary team verifies it.
• Teeth. Soft food or soaked kibble is a texture decision. It is not a nutrient profile.
• Kidneys. The Frontiers paper found no consistent phosphorus drop in grocery senior diets versus adult bags. A grocery “7+” bag is not a renal diet.
• Heart. The low-sodium heart page is a different URL. This page does not treat heart disease.

Stop shopping and call the clinic if: rapid weight change, vomiting, diarrhea, new thirst, refusal to eat, new lameness you want to “fix” with glucosamine kibble, a cough or faint, or the current food is already a therapeutic diet.

AAFCO: a label that implies the product will treat a disease, without an approved drug, is misbranded. “Reduces inflammation,” “cures cancer,” “improves joint function” are their examples, not our shopping list.

“Senior” is a marketing word. Read the life-stage line.

AAFCO: complete means all required nutrients; balanced means correct ratios. The statement is almost invariably on the back or side, in small print.

Eleven of 61 products (18 percent) in the 2025 Frontiers run failed at least one measured AAFCO adult-maintenance nutrient. That is their lab. It is not our kitchen.

WSAVA 2021: all-life-stages foods are built to the growth and reproduction profile. Still complete. Not a promise that calorie density matches a dog whose walks have shortened.

Second: is the food AAFCO complete for the right family?

Three printed formats: formulated to meet; animal feeding tests; family statement comparable to a feeding-tested product.

The opposite sentence: intermittent or supplementary feeding only. WSAVA: 10 percent or less of the diet, unless a veterinarian is using a therapeutic food.

Treats conspicuously labeled snack or treat are exempt from complete-and-balanced. A monthly carton of biscuits, chews, and a toy is not a senior diet.

WSAVA questions for the company: staff nutritionist credentials (PhD animal nutrition, ACVN, or ECVCN); who formulates; quality control; published feeding research; calories per cup or pack; typical analysis; made-by vs made-for. If they will not answer, be cautious.

“Human-grade,” “holistic,” and “premium” are unregulated words WSAVA tells you to discount.

Calories: 3,791 kcal/kg, 423 kcal/cup (fed). Transition: 7 to 10 days. Maker claims about botanical oils and alertness in dogs 7+ within 30 days are the manufacturer’s research claims. We did not replicate them. A Canadian listing of this SKU was marked discontinued as of February 2026 when we opened it. Those four foods can pass the rule when (a) the clinic is still in the shopping column, (b) the statement on the package you receive matches adult maintenance, and (c) you are buying that food on a schedule, not a rotating surprise.

Fresh subscriptions: delivery of an all-life-stages food

The Farmer’s Dog, Nom Nom, Ollie, and Spot & Tango sell recurring, portioned meals. They are not marketplace grocery bags we can link honestly for every recipe. This page describes the official statement and stops.

The Farmer’s Dog. Official digest pages: AAFCO has two dog nutrient profiles — adult maintenance, and growth and reproduction — and “AAFCO has no official nutrient profile for senior dogs.” The company’s food “is labeled as suitable for ‘all life stages,’ because it is formulated to meet the requirements for both.” A companion senior page: there is “no official AAFCO standard for senior food and no reason that dogs who are thriving on their current diet should make a switch based on age alone.” Maker moisture talk ~70 percent versus kibble around 10 percent. Medical conditions go to a veterinarian.

Nom Nom Beef Mash. Official meal page: formulated to meet AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for all life stages including growth of large size dogs (70 lb or more as an adult). 201 kcal per cup. Moisture maximum 77 percent. 7-day mix (25 / 50 / 75 / 100 percent). Recipes described as formulated by board-certified veterinary nutritionists. That is their staffing claim. Formulated-to-meet is the legal sentence.

Ollie Fresh Beef. Official ingredients page: formulated to meet AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for all life stages, including growth of large size dogs (>70 pounds as an adult). Guaranteed analysis: crude protein minimum 9 percent, crude fat minimum 7 percent, crude fiber maximum 2 percent, moisture maximum 72 percent. Calorie content (fed): 376 kcal/cup.

Spot & Tango Beef & Barley UnKibble. Official recipe page: formulated to meet AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for all life stages including growth of large size dogs (70 lbs or more as an adult). 4,792 kcal/kg. Shelf-stable is a storage fact, not a nutrient upgrade. The company has warned that some marketplace listings are unauthorized resellers. That is why this page has no buy link for UnKibble.

A complete all-life-stages fresh plan can pass step 2. It still has to pass step 1 and step 3. Fresh food sold as a topper, mixer, or intermittent food fails step 2 as a sole diet.

Third: is a subscription the cheapest or most reliable way to buy that food?

Once the food has a name and a statement, delivery is a household problem.

Useful delivery classes:

• Maker autoship of the same SKU. Royal Canin’s own page prints a 5 percent autoship discount, free cancellation, and the ability to change frequency or pack size.
• Marketplace Subscribe & Save of the same SKU. A Hill’s 7+ bag or a Bright Mind bag on a four-week cadence is still that bag. Confirm the statement after a formula change.
• Fresh or air-dried direct-to-consumer plans. Price usually tracks the dog’s calories, not a flat “senior box” fee.
• A store run. If the household already buys the same complete food cheaper at a grocer, a subscription is optional convenience, not a nutrient.

What to price, without inventing a monthly band we did not measure:

• Calories per day × cost per calorie, not cost per pretty pack.
• Shipping, ice, and whether a missed truck leaves you without a complete food.
• Pause, skip, and cancel rules before the first charge.
• Whether the plan lets you lock a recipe.

AAHA 2021: complete-and-balanced diet ≥90 percent of daily intake; treats and extras ≤10 percent. A subscription that ships a full diet plus a monthly treat pile is how the 10 percent disappears.

There is no sourced 20–25 percent calorie cut for every older dog.

What fails the rule

• The dog is a medical patient, not a shopper.
• There is no complete-and-balanced statement for adult maintenance or all life stages.
• The product is a treat, topper, or intermittent food sold as dinner.
• The “subscription” is a toy-and-treat carton. Mixed objects live on the subscription reviews page.
• The plan is grain-free as a senior strategy.
• Joint language is doing drug work.

Raw or home-prepared food is not “more senior.” WSAVA includes raw-diet risk language. Completeness still applies.

Wet, dry, fresh — texture is not a nutrient profile

• Dry food is calorie-dense per cup. Hard kibble is not dental care. Royal Canin’s Small Aging 12+ page notes the kibble can be softened with water.
• Wet food is high moisture. Adding a can on top of a full kibble ration without calorie math is how weight moves.
• Gently cooked fresh is high moisture and usually arrives frozen. Soft food can help a dog with few teeth. It does not make an incomplete recipe complete.
• Air-dried (Spot & Tango UnKibble on the page we opened) is shelf-stable. The statement is still formulated-to-meet all life stages.
• A mix is fine inside AAHA’s 10 percent extras.

Change the bowl slowly, then keep the log

AAHA 2021: diet adjustments over 4 to 7 days may reduce negative gastrointestinal responses. Hill’s 7+ pages print a 7-day mix. The Bright Mind page prints 7 to 10 days. Nom Nom prints a 7-day 25 / 50 / 75 / 100 percent ramp.

Keep a short log: weight, cups or packs actually fed (including treats in the same shipment), stool, appetite, any new limp or cough.

If the new food was a clinic prescription, do not abandon it because a quiz offered half off the first box.

When to stop shopping

Call the clinic instead of the cart when the dog has a diagnosed disease you are trying to treat with an over-the-counter senior subscription; when weight is moving fast; when the current food is therapeutic; when you cannot find a complete-and-balanced statement; when the “box” is treats.

Multi-dog subscriptions and the locked recipe

Two older dogs are two statements. A Bright Mind refill at 423 kcal/cup on one dog and a therapeutic cardiac diet on the other is a common kitchen. Do not pour the “senior box” into both bowls because the quiz asked for two birthdays. Lock the recipe per dog. A rotating chef’s choice you cannot read a statement for fails step 2.

If a puppy shares the freezer, all-life-stages fresh food can be legally complete for both. Calorie density may still be built for growth. Weigh the senior. The label page is the statement framework. This page is the truck.

Ice, missed trucks, and a gap in the complete food
