What tofu cat litter is actually made of
Most tofu litter starts as a food-industry leftover. Soybean fiber or pea fiber is mixed with starch and a binder, then cut into short pellets.
Tuft & Paw lists soybean fiber, calcium carbonate, corn starch, pea fiber, and activated carbon in its unscented bag. The lavender bag swaps carbon for dried lavender at a 1 percent concentration, per Tuft & Paw.
pidan lists organic pea bean dregs, starch, guar gum, and bentonite. The same page states a 70 percent organic tofu mix and 30 percent bentonite with STA particles.
MICHU lists pea fiber, plant fiber, and natural binding agents. The Gen3 page says the formula contains no clay and no bentonite.
Rufus & Coco lists wheat and soy fibers plus a binding agent and fragrance. That page also says Wee Kitty Eco Plant Flushable Litter does not contain bentonite clay.
Those lists decide later flush talk. Bentonite swells in water. Plant fiber is what makers mean by break-down.
Tofu pellets feel larger than scoopable clay. Treat acceptance as a trial.
Clump, flush, and dust are three different claims
Clump, flush, and dust get sold as one package. They are not. A bag can clump well and still tell you not to flush.
Clump
Clumping tofu uses starch and fiber to lock urine into a scoopable mass. Tuft & Paw says a small amount of liquid hardens the pellet slightly. The same page says the pellet then breaks down when submerged.
Rufus & Coco says Wee Kitty Eco Plant Flushable Litter absorbs 5 times its weight in liquid. The same page says ammonia odor is trapped within 5 minutes.
pidan calls its blend fast-clumping and “rapid extreme absorption.” That page does not publish a minutes-to-clump figure. We did not invent one.
Flush
Flush is a plumbing claim and a wastewater claim. They are not the same thing.
Tuft & Paw calls the unscented and lavender formulas fully flushable. It tells septic users to flush only small amounts at a time.
The OdorStop page says the opposite. Do not flush OdorStop, because it contains bentonite.
pidan prints a flushable icon on the Signature Tofu Blend page, and that same page lists 30 percent bentonite. We flag the conflict. We did not resolve it in a drain.
MICHU’s Gen3 page says Australian water authorities generally advise flushing only toilet paper and human waste. MICHU tells owners to seal used litter and follow local council rules.
Rufus & Coco says Wee Kitty Eco Plant Flushable Litter takes 5 minutes to disintegrate in water. It calls small-quantity flushing septic-safe on that page.
California Fish and Game Code section 4501 requires a no-flush or trash-disposal statement on cat litter sold in that state. We read the statute on the California Legislature site. It took effect January 1, 2007, and cites cat feces, T. gondii, and sea otter mortality.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, on its Preventing Toxoplasmosis page, tells owners to change the litter box daily. CDC states the parasite does not become infectious until 1 to 5 days after a cat sheds it.
A flush icon on a bag does not override a city sewer rule. It also does not override a state label law.
Dust
Tuft & Paw claims 99 percent dust-free for both the pure tofu bags and OdorStop. It says the pellets are triple-screened. OdorStop still uses 25 percent bentonite, formed into rounded granules, per that page.
pidan, MICHU, and Rufus & Coco use “anti-dust” or “low dust” language. None of those three pages publishes a dust percentage.

Tuft & Paw says the unscented bag is 58 percent lighter than clay. It says one 9.25 lb bag lasts about a month for one cat, with some homes reaching 40 days.
Unopened bags are best used within 24 months of the printed production date. Opened bags should be used within 3 to 6 months.
The OdorStop bag is also 9.25 lb. Tuft & Paw says that mix is 50 percent lighter than pure clay litter.
pidan lists a 5.29 lb net weight and a 24-month storage life. The same page says one cat typically uses around 2 bags per month.
MICHU lists a 2.5 kg / 6 L pack and a carton of 43 by 28 by 7 cm. The page does not give a fixed days-per-bag figure.
Rufus & Coco sells the Eco Plant bag as 4 kg. The same page says a single cat can send over 200 kg of litter to landfill each year.

Where tofu pellets struggle
Pellets fail in three common setups: automatic boxes, very large cats in small trays, and damp storage.
Tuft & Paw says most self-cleaning boxes are built for fine clay. It says Really Great Cat Litter may not work reliably in many automatic systems. MICHU says Gen3 pellets may be too large for some sifting screens.
If you want a machine, match the litter that machine’s maker lists. Start with our automatic litter box guide before you pour pellets into a rake.
Large cats need a bigger footprint and a deeper bed. Pellets that look fine in a photo can feel sparse in a small pan.
A litter box sized for large cats gives the pellets room to clump instead of smearing on the base.
Humidity is the quiet failure. Tuft & Paw’s 3-to-6-month opened window exists because plant fiber takes on moisture.
A damp garage bag turns to crumbs that track.
Scent is another rejection point. Tuft & Paw’s lavender bag uses dried petals, not essential oil, at 1 percent.
MICHU sells peach, green tea, and other scents on the Gen3 page. Start unscented if your cat walks away from perfume.
How to switch and scoop without wrecking the box
Switch over several days. Rufus & Coco’s page says to sprinkle old litter on top, then raise the new share until the tray is all Wee Kitty. That method works for any pellet swap.
Keep the tray dry before the first fill. Wet plastic turns the first layer into paste.
Scoop daily. CDC’s 1-to-5-day window is about parasite timing, not odor. Daily scooping still serves both jobs.
Bag feces even if the bag says flushable. California’s section 4501 wording tells buyers not to flush litter sold in that state.
A city sewer rule can say the same thing. The trash is the default that does not depend on a marketing icon.
If you do flush a clay-free, flush-labeled clump, send one small scoop at a time. Tuft & Paw and Rufus & Coco both qualify flushing that way. Never send a full pan.
Replace the whole bed on a schedule you can see. pidan’s 2-bags-per-month note and Tuft & Paw’s one-bag-per-month note are starting points. High-output cats will beat both.
Store spare bags sealed, cool, and dry.
Tofu litter earns its keep when you need clumps without a heavy clay pail. The Flush Label Split is the decision, not the word tofu. Read the bentonite line, then the flush sentence.

Only if the maker page says so and lists no bentonite. In this set, that means Tuft & Paw Really Great Cat Litter and Rufus & Coco Wee Kitty Eco Plant Flushable Litter. OdorStop, MICHU Gen3, and California Fish and Game Code section 4501 still point you to the trash.
Does tofu cat litter control odor as well as clay?
Blends that list bentonite are the closer paper match to clay. OdorStop lists 25 percent bentonite, and pidan lists 30 percent. Clay-free bags lean on charcoal or a timed claim such as Rufus & Coco’s 5-minute ammonia trap.
How dusty is tofu litter?
