A food switch made overnight can do the same job. New fat, new fiber, or a new protein can speed transit. Faster transit is louder.

Scavenged trash and table scraps are another ordinary path. Rich fat and mystery items ferment, so gas rises. Stool often loosens within a day.

Open Veterinary Journal reviewed 1,575 dogs seen by video teletriage for GI signs. Vomiting was the complaint in 62 percent of those dogs. Diarrhea was present in 43 percent.

Only 23 percent of that sample received a same-visit emergency-referral recommendation. Abdominal distention raised referral odds by 174 percent. Lethargy raised them by 126 percent.

Those figures are clinic decisions, not home diagnoses. They still name the signs that moved trained eyes.

Call a clinic the same day if gurgling arrives with repeated vomiting. Call if appetite drops, energy drops, or the belly feels tight.

Treat a hard, swollen belly and unproductive retching as an emergency. The American College of Veterinary Surgeons describes gastric dilatation-volvulus as rapidly progressive and life-threatening.

That same ACVS page reports mortality near 15 percent once the condition is established. Time since onset raises risk. Do not wait to “see if the gurgle settles.”

Deep-chested large dogs sit in the higher-risk group. A first-degree relative with the condition also sits on that ACVS risk list.

The Soft-Belly Four-Check

Use one screen before you buy anything. Check appetite, stool, belly feel, and energy.

A dog that eats on schedule and passes formed stool can be watched at home. The belly should stay soft, and the dog should still want a walk. Recheck those four points every few hours.

Fail any one check and you leave the home-watch lane. A skipped meal, black stool, or a tight belly is a fail.

Puppies, seniors, and dogs on other drugs have a shorter watch window. So do dogs that already have a known gut disease.

Changes you can make without a new product

Water stays down. Offer small amounts often if the dog has vomited once and still wants to drink.

Royal Canin’s U.S. Gastrointestinal dry page lists 3,902 kcal/kg and 394 kcal per cup. Energy is 14 percent higher than its Moderate Calorie sibling. Bags on that page are 8.8 lb and 22 lb.

That Royal Canin page also prints a minimum of 23.0 percent crude protein and 18.0 percent crude fat. EPA plus DHA is listed at a 0.24 percent minimum.

Outward Hound lists three cup sizes on the Fun Feeder Slo Bowl page. Small holds ¾ cup, medium holds 2 cups, and large holds 3 to 4 cups.

The same Outward Hound page claims the maze can stretch a meal up to 10 times longer. It also lists three pace levels: Slow, Slower, and Slowest. The bowl is listed as BPA-, PVC-, lead-, and phthalate-free.

A slow bowl will not fix a twist. It only changes gulp speed. Use it when the Four-Check is still green.

Hill’s i/d Chicken Flavor Dry page tells owners to mix the new food in over a 7-day period. That is a concrete ramp, not a vibe.

The Association of American Feed Control Officials approved new model pet-food label rules on July 31, 2023. AAFCO called that the first major label update in more than 40 years.

AAFCO also asked states for six years of enforcement discretion from the 2024 Official Publication. Pet Food Label Modernization work began in 2015. New bags will not all look the same during that window.

Read the nutritional adequacy line. Treats and supplements are often labeled for intermittent or supplemental feeding only. They are not a full diet.
