Quick answer: Match the flake type first: dry scale needs moisture, greasy scale needs a listed keratolytic, and moving flakes need a clinic mite check. Book a clinic visit if flakes persist, the skin smells, or your dog itches.
Most dogs flake from secondary seborrhea caused by allergies, parasites, infection, or hormones, not a primary skin disease.
This page is a research-desk brief that compares published manuals and current maker labels.
Our selection rule is narrow. We cover causes a published manual names, plus products with a listed active percent or timed wash. Human anti-dandruff bottles and unverified brands stayed out.
The Merck Veterinary Manual’s February 2024 professional review, updated in May 2025, states that most seborrheic animals have secondary seborrhea. It also says primary inherited seborrhea usually begins before 18 to 24 months of age.
A 1989 Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association paper counted 11,456 skin-disease diagnoses at 17 teaching hospitals in 1983. Seborrhea sat among the ten most common diagnoses that year.
What those white flakes actually are
Dandruff in a dog is loose scale. The scale is dead skin that sheds faster than the coat can hide it.
Clinicians call the pattern seborrhea. Dry scale is seborrhea sicca, and greasy scale is seborrhea oleosa.
The Merck Veterinary Manual describes seborrhea as a keratinization defect that raises cutaneous scaling.
Primary seborrhea is inherited and rare. Secondary seborrhea is the common form. Allergies and endocrinopathies sit at the top of Merck’s underlying-cause list.
Secondary infection often rides along. Merck notes that coagulase-positive Staphylococcus species or Malassezia yeast frequently add odor, redness, and more scale.
The Four-Flake Filter
Our research team analyzed published cause lists and grouped home clues into one rule. We call it the Four-Flake Filter. A pattern belongs here only if a manual names it.
Dry scale, little itch
Winter air and too many baths can strip the coat. Mild scale with a comfortable dog often starts here. Merck places gentle, moisturizing washes in this group.
Greasy scale or a rancid odor
Excess sebum mats the hair. The skin may feel waxy. Merck lists sulfur, salicylic acid, or benzoyl peroxide for oilier coats.
Large flakes that seem to move
That pattern can be Cheyletiella, the mite nicknamed walking dandruff. VCA Animal Hospitals says the scales are often large and sit on the back.
New flakes plus thirst or heat-seeking
Merck says environmental allergies are more likely when signs start before age 5. An endocrinopathy or neoplasia is more likely when seborrhea starts in middle age.
Hair loss, open sores, or ear gunk means stop guessing. Those signs need a clinic workup, not another wash.
Merck warns that scale often looks worse during the first 14 days of a keratolytic shampoo. Sloughed cells catch in the hair. Continued bathing then lifts them out.
Parasites that mimic dry skin
Not every white speck is dry skin. Some specks walk, and some are flea dirt.
The American Veterinary Medical Association describes fleas as no bigger than a sesame seed. It also names the cat flea as the species that most often infests both dogs and cats.
AVMA says one of the first clues is flea dirt, the black droppings left in the coat. Wet a few specks on a pale towel. Flea dirt smears rust-red, while skin flakes stay pale.
Cheyletiella is different. VCA Animal Hospitals calls it uncommon now because modern flea control reduced it. The mites still spread in shelters, kennels, and grooming shops.
VCA says most pets need 3 to 4 medicated baths, given once a week, to lift mites and scale. All pets in the house need treatment at the same time.
People can pick up the mite. VCA says a person is an accidental host, and human signs usually clear within three weeks after pets and rooms are treated.
Sarcoptic mites do not look like dandruff first. AVMA describes intense itching, hair loss, and thickened skin. Those dogs chew shoes and furniture when the itch spikes.
If chewing is the louder problem, see our guide to stopping shoe chewing. A home comb cannot replace a skin scraping.
Merck still lists scrapings, cytology, and blood work before anyone calls the case primary seborrhea.
What AAFCO requires for skin fats, and what it does not
A thin, flaky coat often gets blamed on cheap food. The label math is more specific.
The Association of American Feed Control Officials, or AAFCO, publishes Dog Food Nutrient Profiles. Adult-maintenance linoleic acid sits at 1.1 percent of dry matter. Growth and reproduction sit at 1.3 percent.
Adult crude fat has a 5.5 percent dry-matter minimum. Growth and reproduction sit at 8.5 percent.
AAFCO did not set an adult minimum for EPA plus DHA. Those two fats are listed as not determined for maintenance. Growth and reproduction require 0.05 percent EPA plus DHA on a dry-matter basis.
AAFCO did set a ceiling on the fat balance. The omega-6 to omega-3 ratio may not exceed 30 to 1.
Zinc matters for scale as well. AAFCO’s adult-maintenance zinc minimum is 80 mg per kg of dry matter. Growth sits at 100 mg per kg.
Those numbers are formulation floors. They are not a skin-disease dose.
A 2011 Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association review cited a trial in 16 pruritic dogs. Dogs received 180 mg of EPA and 120 mg of DHA per 4.55 kg daily for 6 weeks.
An adult food can meet AAFCO and still sit far below that marine-oil dose.
Rendered meals change the fat story too. Chicken meal is a concentrated protein, not a named EPA source.
Food allergy can flake the skin and upset the gut. AVMA says a clinician may run a dietary elimination trial after other causes are ruled out. If meals come back whole, see our page on undigested vomit.
What current maker labels list
Our research team compared four currently sold products on their maker pages in September 2026. We scored labels, not performance.
A product entered the table only if the maker listed a numeric active percent or a timed wash protocol.
Merck names selenium sulfide as a keratolytic class. Those human bottles still lack a dog-labeled maker page, so they stayed out.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, in a December 20, 2010 Federal Register notice, listed topical shampoos among unapproved animal drugs then on the market. A pet-aisle wash is not an FDA-approved new animal drug unless its label says so.
Ceva’s DOUXO S3 SEB Shampoo lists 0.5 percent Ophytrium. The U.S. maker page says to use one pump per 4 lb, then leave the lather on for 5 to 10 minutes.
Veterinary Formula Clinical Care Antiparasitic and Antiseborrheic lists 2.0 percent salicylic acid, 1.0 percent micronized sulfur, and 0.6 percent coal tar. Leave it on 10 to 15 minutes, 2 to 3 times per week, per the maker page.
That formula is labeled for dogs 12 weeks and older. The same page says it is not safe for cats because of the coal tar.
earthbath Oatmeal and Aloe Itch Relief Shampoo lists colloidal oatmeal and organic aloe vera. The 16 fl oz maker page calls it soap-free and pH-balanced for pets over 6 weeks. A 16 oz bottle may be diluted up to 10 to 1.
Pet MD Benzoyl Peroxide Shampoo lists 3 percent benzoyl peroxide. The maker page says to leave it on for 5 to 10 minutes. The starting schedule is 2 to 3 times per week for 4 weeks, then once a week.
| Product | Form | Maker-listed actives | Label contact time or volume | Species and age on label |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DOUXO S3 SEB Shampoo | Shampoo | 0.5% Ophytrium | 5–10 minutes; 1 pump per 4 lb | Dogs and cats |
| Veterinary Formula Clinical Care Antiparasitic & Antiseborrheic Medicated Shampoo | Shampoo | 2.0% salicylic acid, 1.0% micronized sulfur, 0.6% coal tar | 10–15 minutes; 2–3 times per week | Dogs 12 weeks and older; not for cats |
| earthbath Oatmeal & Aloe Itch Relief Shampoo | Shampoo | Colloidal oatmeal; organic aloe vera | Dilute up to 10:1 from a 16 fl oz bottle | Pets over 6 weeks |
| Pet MD Benzoyl Peroxide Shampoo | Shampoo | 3% benzoyl peroxide | 5–10 minutes; 2–3 times per week for 4 weeks | Dogs and cats |
Across those four labels, listed contact times ran from 5 to 15 minutes. Only one listed coal tar. Only one listed a benzoyl peroxide percent.
Merck’s wash cadence for primary seborrhea is 2 to 3 baths per week until the coat improves. Maintenance then falls to 1 to 2 baths per week.
If topical care is not enough, Merck lists oral vitamin A at 8,000 to 10,000 units per dog every 12 hours. The published maximum is 30,000 units per dog every 12 hours. That range is a clinic decision.
A two-week plan that still leaves room for a clinic
Week one is sorting, not shopping. Comb the coat over dark paper and note dry flakes, grease, odor, itch, and flea dirt. Photograph the back and the belly.
If flakes seem to walk, skip the spa aisle. Book a scraping. Treat every pet in the home if a clinician finds Cheyletiella.
If the scale is dry and the dog is comfortable, start with a moisturizing wash from the table. Follow the maker’s contact time.
If the coat is greasy, pick the sulfur-and-salicylic formula or the 3 percent benzoyl peroxide wash. Merck says benzoyl peroxide can dry the skin. Stop if redness climbs.
Keep the room from swinging bone-dry to steamy. An American Journal of Veterinary Research paper in the AVMA family measured dust-mite allergens in 50 homes. Der f 1 showed up in 100 percent of those homes.
Homes with higher allergen loads were more likely to hit a maximum relative humidity of 75 percent or more. Wash bedding in hot water. Vacuum the bed and the couch.
Do not add a marine oil on day one unless a clinician sets the dose. The JAVMA trial used a high EPA load, not kitchen fish oil.
Reassess on day 14. Merck already told you scale can look worse before it looks better. If odor, itch, or hair loss is worse, stop the experiment.
Ask for cytology and blood work.
FAQ
Is dog dandruff always dry skin?
No. Dry scale is one pattern. Greasy seborrhea, yeast, bacteria, fleas, and Cheyletiella can all shed white debris. Merck treats most cases as secondary seborrhea until other causes are ruled out.
Can I wash my dog with my own anti-dandruff shampoo?
Merck lists selenium sulfide as a keratolytic class for greasy coats. The FDA has also flagged many animal shampoos as unapproved animal drugs.
How often should I bathe a flaky dog?
Merck’s cadence for primary seborrhea is 2 to 3 baths per week until the coat improves, then 1 to 2 baths per week. Veterinary Formula’s page says 2 to 3 times per week, then less. earthbath says most pets do not need more than one weekly moisturizing bath.
Will fish oil stop the flakes?
AAFCO does not require a minimum EPA plus DHA amount in adult-maintenance dog food. A JAVMA review cited 180 mg of EPA and 120 mg of DHA per 4.55 kg daily in one 6-week trial. Oil will not clear mites, thyroid disease, or a yeast overgrowth.
When should flakes send me to a clinic today?
Go now if the skin is raw, the dog will not eat, or the itch stops sleep. Go soon if flakes start after age 5 with thirst, extra panting, or heat-seeking. Merck flags those later-onset cases for endocrine and other internal disease.
Can my family catch walking dandruff?
VCA Animal Hospitals says people can pick up Cheyletiella from an infected pet. You are an accidental host, so the infestation is self-limiting. VCA says human signs usually resolve within three weeks after the pets and the environment are treated.
Does switching protein fix dandruff?
Sometimes, if the true cause is a food allergy. AVMA describes an elimination trial after parasites and other allergies are addressed. A new protein does nothing for low humidity, fleas, or primary seborrhea.
