The Pan-First Fit Rule
The Pan-First Fit Rule has three checks. Measure the pan. Then match fill and wash path to the job you will actually do.
Start with the removable plastic pan. Do not start with the crate’s door-to-door marketing length. Wire length includes frame, door wire, and tray overhang.
A pad cut to that longer number bunches at the door. Bunching lifts corners and hides spills.
K9 Ballistics states this gap in public numbers. Its Medium Tough Ripstop Dog Crate Pad is listed at 35 inches by 22 inches. The same page calls that size ideal for 36-by-23-inch wire crates.
That listed pad is 1 inch shorter than the crate it names. It is also 1 inch narrower.
FurHaven’s Water-Resistant Kennel Pad Large is listed at 36 inches by 24 inches. All five FurHaven sizes on that page are 1.25 inches thick. Against the 23-inch crate width K9 Ballistics names, that Large pad is 1 inch wider.
K&H Pet Products lists its Large Self-Warming Crate Pad at 25 inches by 37 inches. Treat 37 inches as the long side. That long side is 1 inch longer than a 36-inch crate length.
Those three listed maps do not agree. A tape on the pan beats a size name on the box.
Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine says a crate should let a dog stand without ducking. The dog should also turn around and lie down. A thick bolster that eats floor width can undo that room.
Measure the open floor after the pad is in, not only the empty tray.
MidWest Homes for Pets sells QuietTime Defender pads in five crate lengths: 24, 30, 36, 42, and 48 inches. Its QuietTime Deluxe Diamond Stitch Pet Bed adds 18-, 22-, and 54-inch lengths. Eight listed lengths still do not replace a pan measurement.
If you use a divider for a growing puppy, measure the short side of the pan. Cornell’s crate page says a divider keeps the sleep zone small during housetraining. A full-length pad will fold against that divider.
Fill: fleece, foam, reflective, and fiber
Fill decides warmth, loft, and what you can put in a washer. It does not decide fit.
K&H Pet Products describes its Self-Warming Crate Pad as a microfleece top over a reflective layer. In its product Q&A, K&H says that layer is metalized plastic, like a space blanket. The pad returns the dog’s own heat and does not plug in.
K&H also warns that this design is for indoor, room-temperature spots. The same Q&A says the pad will not return enough heat for outdoor winter use.
FurHaven lists a medical-grade polyurethane foam core under coated polycanvas. The maker presents that pad as a wipe-clean base.
MidWest’s QuietTime Defender uses a foam pad inside a zip cover. MidWest says the cover has a hidden zipper and Teflon fabric protector. The cover is the washable part; the foam is the cushion.
MidWest’s QuietTime Deluxe Diamond Stitch Pet Bed uses a cushioned poly-cotton base. Polyester-filled bolsters sit on the rim. Elastic corner straps hook to a crate pan.

A pad you will not wash becomes a wet sponge. Match the label to your laundry.
K&H Pet Products says to wash the whole Self-Warming Crate Pad on a gentle cycle with cold water. Line dry only.
K9 Ballistics says you can wipe the Tough Ripstop pad or machine-wash the whole pad. Use cold water on a delicate cycle, then machine-dry on low. The cover is not removable.
MidWest says the QuietTime Defender cover is machine washable and dryer friendly. Remove the foam first. MidWest lists the Deluxe Diamond Stitch bed as fully machine washable.
FurHaven’s Water-Resistant Kennel Pad page says to wipe the coated polycanvas with a clean cloth.
FurHaven’s January 26, 2024 wash guide is stricter on indoor zip covers. It says to wash those covers in cold water every two to three weeks. Never use bleach.
The same guide tells owners to replace a water-resistant liner every 3 months. It also says to replace a cover about every 6 months. Those intervals are FurHaven’s schedule, not a lab result from this desk.
If two wash paths conflict, keep the stricter one.

Comparing those published charts, thickness is not a single standard. FurHaven lists 1.25 inches on every size. K9 Ballistics lists about 1.5 inches.
K&H does not print a thickness on its Self-Warming page.
Size counts also differ. MidWest’s Deluxe line lists 8 crate lengths; Defender lists 5. K&H and K9 Ballistics each list 6 inch-based sizes.
K&H states a one-year limited warranty and more than 20 years of product design. MidWest states a one-year limited warranty on the Deluxe Diamond Stitch bed. FurHaven states a 60-day worry-free warranty; K9 Ballistics states a 1 Year Chew Proof Warranty.
When to keep a pad out
A pad can make a crate worse. Keep it out when it blocks the door, hides a leak, or becomes a chew toy.
K9 Ballistics says seams can let fluid in. The fiberfill center can hold moisture. A wet pad on a leaky pan hides the mess and the smell.
MidWest designed the Defender cover to resist fluids, oil, and dirt. That is a stain claim, not a promise the foam stays dry.
The American Veterinary Medical Association’s 2023 travel brochure asks for a solid, leak-proof crate bottom. It also asks for plenty of absorbent material on that floor.
A slick wipe-clean pad can meet the leak-proof idea. It may fail the absorbent part unless you add a thin washable layer.
The AVMA’s transport best-practices document says absorbent bedding should match ambient temperature. It gives a concrete example: avoid heavy blankets in summer. A thick fleece pad in a hot car is the same kind of mistake.
Cornell’s crate page lists distress signs that mean confinement is failing. Those include excessive barking, pacing, panting, eliminating, or drooling. A plusher pad does not fix that pattern.
If your dog shreds fabric, a soft pad is the wrong object in a closed crate. Use a wipe-clean mat or a bare tray until chewing stops.
Travel crates and thin bedding
Home crates and travel crates are not the same floor problem. A thick pad can choke airflow in a plastic airline kennel.
The AVMA’s 2023 travel brochure sets a cargo-crate size test. The dog must stand without touching the top. The dog must also sit, turn around, and lie down.
Short-nosed breeds need one size larger than normal. A tall bolster can steal that headroom.
The same brochure says domestic cargo crates need ventilation on at least three sides. International flights need four sides. A pad that climbs the walls can block those vents.
The AVMA also says defective crates are the most common cause of escaped or injured animals in air travel. A bunched pad that jams a door latch is a defect you added.
