This label desk compared published specs and did not run feeding trials, bloodwork, or bag-opening tests. Listed crude protein ran from 40% on Mazuri Ferret Diet to 62% on Wysong Ferret Epigen 90. That 22-point spread is the real story.
A bag can be legal cat food and still sit far below a working ferret kibble. The rest of this page shows how we drew that line.
The 38/18/4 Gate: what this desk covers
We use one rule. A dry formula enters this page only if its maker hits three printed floors. Those floors are 38% crude protein, 18% crude fat, and no more than 4% crude fiber.
Those floors match Mazuri Ferret Diet, the leanest ferret kibble we kept, at 40%, 20%, and 4%.
Indoor adult bags drop out. Weight-control bags drop out. Grocery pâté with unnamed meat drops out.

The rule is a filter, not a ranking. Passing it means the published numbers can bridge a few days. It does not mean the bag is a ferret diet.
Why a cat profile is not a ferret profile
The Association of American Feed Control Officials recognizes only two complete-and-balanced authorities. Those are its Dog and Cat Food Nutrient Profiles. Ferrets sit outside that pair.
A cat adequacy line on a bag does not prove the formula was built for a mustelid.
AAFCO also lists 44 required nutrient specifications in the Cat Food Nutrient Profiles. Those 44 points are for cats. They are not a hidden ferret checklist.
The Merck Veterinary Manual sets a working ferret range at 35% to 40% protein. It also keeps carbohydrate under 25% and fiber under 2.5%. The same page notes that high-quality kitten food may be given.
That is a clinical range, not a shopping aisle. Current ferret labels sit at or above that protein band.
Wysong Ferret Epigen 90 lists 62% crude protein. That is 22 points above the Manual’s 40% top end. Mazuri Ferret Diet lists a 4% fiber maximum, above the Manual’s 2.5% fiber ceiling.
Those gaps are why a species line on the bag still matters. Ferrets burn animal protein and fat. Plant starch fills a cat bag without filling a ferret.

How to read one bag in sixty seconds
AAFCO requires a guaranteed analysis. Look for a minimum for crude protein and crude fat. Then look for a maximum for crude fiber and moisture.
Those four numbers are legal bounds, not lab averages. A food can sit above the printed protein minimum.
Then read the ingredient list. AAFCO requires ingredients in descending order by weight. The first name should be a named animal tissue or meal.
Corn, peas, rice, or potato in the first three slots fails this desk. A plant in slot one means the mix is backwards for a ferret.
Skip the front-panel poetry. AAFCO’s “with” rule lets a named meat appear at only 3% of the formula. “With chicken” is not a meat diet.
Confirm the species line. AAFCO requires the intended animal on the principal display panel. “Cat food” means the maker built for a cat.

Wysong Ferret Epigen 90 is the protein outlier. The maker also prints a 15-day switch, starting at about 10% of the bowl. That pace is for a concentrated kibble.
Mazuri Ferret Diet lists more than 90% of its protein from animal sources. The extruded piece is 1/4 inch by 5/16 inch. Mazuri says 2- to 4-pound adults typically eat 6% of body weight a day.
That is about 1/2 to 3/4 cup on Mazuri’s own kibble.
Oxbow Essentials Ferret Food lists the highest taurine minimum in this set, 0.50%. That is 2.5 times the 0.2% floor on Wysong Ferret Epigen 90 and on Instinct Original Kibble for Kittens. Oxbow also prints calcium at 1.20% and phosphorus at 0.90%.
Its first five ingredients are animal proteins and fats. That is the cleanest animal-first stack in this set.
Instinct Original Kibble for Kittens Chicken Recipe is the cat bag in this set. Instinct lists 81% animal ingredients and oils, 19% produce and other items, and 0% grain. Crude fat is 22.5%, the highest fat minimum here.
Taurine is 0.2%. DHA is 0.2%. Peas sit fourth, after three animal meals, so the bag still clears the Gate on the printed numbers.
If the only open bag is a light indoor formula, stop. Those recipes cut fat and calories for house cats. They are the wrong tool.

What “a few days” should mean
Short-term means the gap between an empty ferret bin and the next delivered bag. Think one weekend, not one season.
The Merck Veterinary Manual allows high-quality kitten food. It does not recast that bag as a life-stage ferret diet.
Keep the bowl full. Ferrets nibble often. Mazuri’s 6% body-weight figure is a starting point for its own kibble.
Do not copy that cup count onto a richer kitten bag without watching body condition. Offer small piles and check the waist.
Watch stool and coat. Loose stool, a dull coat, or a ferret that stops eating is a stop sign.
This desk did not measure those outcomes. A clinician who treats ferrets should see a sick animal.
Do not mix in sweet treats to “help them eat it.” Sugar is not a ferret fuel. The rescue is the protein and fat on the label.
Indoor adult bags, wet food, and treats
Most adult cat foods miss the Gate on fat, protein, or both. Indoor lines miss it on purpose. They are built to slow weight gain in cats that sleep on a sofa.
Wet cat food is a different math. Moisture is much higher, so the as-fed protein number looks small. Convert to dry matter before you compare it to kibble.

Day one can be mostly the old kibble. Raise the new share every couple of days. If stool loosens, step back one increment and hold.
Leave fresh water up at all times. Mazuri notes that adults drink often and play in bowls. A bottle or a heavy crock both work if they stay full.
Store open bags the way the maker says. Mazuri asks for a cool, dry spot at or below 75°F. It also says to use the food within one year of the bag date.
