What a Roborovski hamster actually is
The Roborovski hamster is the smallest living hamster. Animal Diversity Web gives an adult head-and-body length of 53 to 81 mm. The tail is a 7-to-11 mm stub, and the ears are 10 to 14 mm.
White patches sit above each eye. There is no mid-dorsal stripe. That pair of traits separates this species from Campbell’s and winter white dwarfs.
Animal Diversity Web traces pet stock to Kazakhstan’s Zaisan basin and a first captive line at the Moscow Zoo. The Zoological Society of London received animals in the late 1970s. The wider pet trade followed in the 1990s.
The same account lists the species as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List. About 18% of the Mongolian range sits inside protected areas. Wild animals still face rodenticides, ploughing, and winter kills.

The American Veterinary Medical Association’s rodent handout says many store cages are too small for natural behavior. It says every rodent needs room to move, nest, and exercise. It does not publish a square-inch minimum.
Our research team multiplied inner footprints on two current maker pages. The Niteangel Bigger World size S lists an inner floor of 30 by 15 inches, or 450 square inches. Size M lists 39.4 by 19.7 inches, or about 776 square inches.
The Prevue Pet Products Universal Small Animal Home 528 lists an outer footprint of 32.5 by 19 inches. That is about 618 square inches. Prevue also lists a 6.25-inch-deep base and 3/8-inch wire spacing.
Niteangel says Bigger World height can hold more than 17.7 inches of bedding. That is still far short of a 90 cm wild burrow. It is deeper than a 6.25-inch tub.
A DIY hamster cage can beat both footprints with a solid, escape-proof lid. Measure the floor yourself. Do not trust a “levels” claim on a box.
Place the enclosure in a quiet room and out of direct sun. Animal Diversity Web records July highs of 40°C in the Alashan desert. A glass tank on a windowsill can overshoot that indoors.
Diet: pellets, seeds, and hoarding
Wild Roborovskis eat mostly seeds. Animal Diversity Web puts seeds at 70% to 90% of the diet, with about 2 grams eaten per day. Insects make up 10% to 30%.
Captive pellets are a full ration, not a seed pile. The two foods we compared both print portions far above that 2-gram wild figure.
Oxbow Animal Health lists Simple Harvest at 17.00% minimum protein and 5.00% minimum fat. Fiber is 10.00% to 15.00%, with 10.00% maximum moisture. Adult “small hamster” feeding is 1/8 cup after 6 months.
Kaytee lists Forti-Diet Pro Health Nourish+Protect Hamster and Gerbil Food at 12.0% minimum crude protein. Crude fat is 6.0% minimum. Fiber and moisture both list a 12.0% maximum, and the feeding line is 2 tablespoons, or about 20 grams.
That is a 5.0-point protein gap on the labels. Oxbow also prints a 100% uniform kibble claim. Kaytee’s ingredient list starts with corn, wheat, milo, millet, and sunflower seed.
A mixed bag lets a hamster cherry-pick fat seeds. A uniform pellet does not. Our research team did not run a feeding trial; we are reporting the two maker pages.
Kaytee tells owners to mix old and new food for 7 to 10 days. Oxbow tells owners to hunt for hidden piles, then cut the next ration. Both match a species that, per Animal Diversity Web, uses cheek pouches and two to four caches.
Offer water in a bottle or a shallow, heavy dish, and change it daily. The American Veterinary Medical Association’s rodent handout asks for nutritionally complete food made for the species, plus fresh water.
Skip citrus, onion, chocolate, and sticky sweets. Keep fruit tiny and rare. Animal Diversity Web records 45 to 215 mm of yearly rain in the Alashan desert.
Handling and night activity
Roborovskis are built for speed, not laps. Animal Diversity Web calls them shy and more passive than related dwarfs. Meetings often end with one animal running to hide.
Laboratory animals aged 18 to 30 weeks ran about 3,000 wheel revolutions a night. Animal Diversity Web converts that to about 1.2 kilometers. Night activity lasts about six hours, versus nine hours for Campbell’s and striped desert hamsters.
The American Veterinary Medical Association’s rodent handout says hamsters are nocturnal and may be grumpy if woken. Handle them with calm, slow movements. Never pick a rodent up by the tail.
Use a cup or hide to move the animal. Sit on the floor and let it step off. Forced grasping teaches biting.
The same handout says hamsters housed in pairs or groups may fight and are usually housed alone. Same-sex pairs sometimes work in this species, then fail without warning. Plan for one hamster per enclosure unless you can split them at once.
Do not wake a sleeping Roborovski for photos. Animal Diversity Web says dry-food eating starts about day 12 and eyes open around day 14. Lactation ends around day 18, and young reach about 70% of adult mass by day 28.

Animal Diversity Web gives a laboratory mean age at death of 26 months. Wild life can fall to 12 months. Predation, parasites, and cold winters cut the wild figure.
The American Veterinary Medical Association’s rodent handout gives hamsters a 2-to-3-year average. Those two ranges overlap. Neither one promises a four-year pet.
Activity rhythms stay steady until the last 4 to 8 days of life, according to Animal Diversity Web. A sudden collapse in wheel use is a late signal, not an early one.
Gestation is 20 to 22 days, with an average litter of 3.6 to 3.9 pups and a high of 10. A female can rear up to four litters in a year. The American Veterinary Medical Association warns against breeding a rodent just so a child can watch a birth.
Watch for wet fur at the tail, a stuck cheek pouch, hunched posture, or loud clicking breaths. Those are reasons to call a clinician who treats small mammals. This desk does not diagnose disease.

The Bigger World size S inner floor is 30 by 15 inches, or 450 square inches. Size L is 47.2 by 19.7 inches, or about 930 square inches. Niteangel says the line is not for highly destructive chewers.
Prevue lists two latching doors, a plastic ramp, and an 18-by-12.375-inch platform. Wire cages need extra bedding piled in the tub. They also need a solid-surface wheel, because a bar wheel can catch a tiny foot.

Hoarded greens rot fast. Spot-check corners every day and pull wet clumps. Leave a handful of old nest so the scent map stays familiar.
