Clay, silica crystals, and plant fibers are the three types of cat litter sold in U.S. stores. This page is a substrate comparison from our research desk. We did not run in-home trials, weigh used boxes, or score brands.
Our research team analyzed current maker pages and one CDC notice. We compared listed bag weights, fill depths, dust claims, and change intervals. We did not open bags or time odor in a room.
The Two-Number Rule we used to pick products
A formula enters the table only if the maker’s current product page publishes at least two numbers. Those numbers must be a bag weight, a fill depth, a dust percentage, or a stated days-to-change interval.
We left out store-brand clones. We left out pellet dump systems with no published fill depth. We also left out any SKU whose maker page showed every size sold out.
Corn, wood, wheat, tofu, and paper all sit inside the plant-fiber family. We did not rank each crop. We picked two plant formulas that still publish bag-life numbers.

Clay litter: the mined bed most households still buy
Chemical & Engineering News quoted Mariangela Imbrenda of the Clorox Company on the litter aisle. She said about 92% of cat litters are clay.
Silica is about 2%. The other 6% covers organic materials such as corn, pine, paper, and tofu.
Clumping clay is usually sodium bentonite. It swells when urine hits it. You scoop the wet mass and leave the dry granules.
Non-clumping clay absorbs liquid and stays loose. You dump the whole box on a schedule. Most current multi-cat bags are clumping formulas.
Dr. Elsey’s Ultra lists natural clay as the only ingredient. The maker’s directions say to fill a clean, dry box with 3–4 inches.
Scoop waste twice daily and add litter as needed. That same page says to trash used litter and not to flush it. Dr. Elsey’s Ultra claims a 99% dust-free pour.

SLIDE names baking soda plus Clump & Seal technology. The maker says used litter should slide out of the box.
Start with a clean, dry box. Do not top off another brand if you want that slide claim.
Clay is heavy. That weight can keep large granules in the box. It also makes a 40 lb bag hard to lift.
A litter box sized for a large cat plus a 3–4 inch clay bed is a heavy lift. Most automatic litter boxes need a hard clump. Clay is still the grain those rakes expect.
Silica gel crystal litter: absorb, stir, then dump
Silica crystal litter is amorphous silica gel. Chemical & Engineering News described the same silicon-and-oxygen framework used in shoe-box desiccant packs. The journal said silica gel can adsorb about 35% of its weight in water without swelling.
Crystals do not form a scoopable urine clump. They take liquid inside the bead. You remove solids, stir the bed, then replace the box when most beads look used.
PrettyLitter’s product page lists a 6 lb bag. The maker says that bag lasts one cat for up to a month. The same page claims odor control for up to 30 days.
On the day we pulled the page, PrettyLitter displayed 56,000+ reviews on that URL. That count is a listing metric, not a lab result.
Fresh Step Clean Care Crystal Litter is an 8 lb bag. The Fresh Step page says one 8 lb bag equals 22 lb of regular clumping litter by volume and estimated usage. It also says one 8 lb bag lasts about a month per cat.
Fresh Step’s directions set a shallow bed. Fill the box with at least 1½–2 inches of crystals. Scoop solids and stir daily.
Dump and refill every 20–30 days, or when most crystals look discolored. Do not flush. The same page claims 2x better absorption versus Fresh Step Odor Shield.
Crystal beds run thinner than clay beds. A 1½–2 inch silica layer is about half the 3–4 inch clay depth on the Dr. Elsey’s page.
That is why an 8 lb crystal bag can replace a much heavier clay bag. Beads feel harder than bentonite fines. Park a second box if a cat refuses the texture.
PrettyLitter and Fresh Step crystals both skip daily urine clumps. They do not skip daily solid removal.
Plant-based litter: corn, wood, and tofu granules
Plant-based litter uses a renewable granule instead of mined clay. Chemical & Engineering News put that organic slice at about 6% of the market.
World’s Best Cat Litter Multiple Cat Unscented is whole-kernel corn grown in the U.S. The maker lists 8, 15, 28, and 32 lb bags. It claims the formula is 99% dust-free.
The 8 lb World’s Best bag is listed at 38+ days for one cat. Two cats drop that figure to 19+ days. Three cats drop it to 12+ days.
World’s Best tells you to keep a 2–3 inch bed and scoop clumps daily. Transition by thirds: one-third new litter, then two-thirds, then a full box. The page calls the formula flushable and septic-safe.
tuft + paw Really Great Cat Litter is a soybean-fiber tofu pellet. The maker lists 9.25 lb per bag. It claims the bag is 58% lighter than clay.
One bag is listed as about a month for one cat. The FAQ says many homes reach up to 40 days. The page also claims a 99% dust-free, triple-screened pellet.
Ingredients for the charcoal formula are soybean fiber, calcium carbonate, corn starch, pea fiber, and activated carbon. tuft + paw says a small amount of liquid hardens the pellet. A toilet bowl of water breaks it down.
Wood-fiber clumping beds exist in the same family. We did not put a wood SKU in the table. The wood page we opened showed every listed size sold out.

Read the fill-depth column as a load plan. Clay at 3–4 inches is the deepest listed bed. Fresh Step crystals at 1½–2 inches are the shallowest.
World’s Best sits in the middle at 2–3 inches. Bag-life claims are not interchangeable. PrettyLitter’s 6 lb month is a full-box dump.
World’s Best’s 38+ days assumes daily clump removal from an 8 lb bag. Fresh Step’s 20–30 day dump is a crystal refresh.
Dust percentages are maker claims. If someone in the home reacts to pour clouds, buy the smallest bag first.
Match the substrate to the box and the chore
Start with the chore you will actually do. Clay and plant clumps ask for a daily scoop. Crystals ask for a daily solid pull, a stir, and a full dump every few weeks.
Rake-style automatics want a firm clump and a fine grain. Fresh Step’s crystal FAQ says most clumping automatics are a poor fit. tuft + paw says most self-cleaning boxes have not caught up to tofu pellets.
A large cat needs floor space more than a special mineral. Pair a wide box with the fill depth the litter’s maker printed. A 3–4 inch clay bed in a small pan will overflow.
Scent is a separate switch. Dr. Elsey’s Ultra and World’s Best Multiple Cat Unscented add no perfume. ARM & HAMMER SLIDE leans on baking soda.
Chemical & Engineering News, citing the American Veterinary Medical Association, said about 25% of U.S. households have a cat. Many of those homes share air with the box. Unscented clay or unscented corn is the conservative first pour.
Switching, scooping, and what labels say about flushing
World’s Best publishes a third-third-third switch. Fresh Step says to mix crystals for a few days or to park a second box.
Mixed beds can ruin clump quality and flush claims. Keep the overlap short.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says to change the litter box daily. The CDC’s toxoplasmosis page states that the parasite does not become infectious until 1–5 days after a cat sheds it. Daily scooping is a public-health interval, not a brand slogan.
Flush directions conflict on purpose. Dr. Elsey’s Ultra and Fresh Step crystals both say do not flush. World’s Best and tuft + paw both market flushable plant granules.
A flushable claim is a maker test against sewer hardware. It is not a parasite-kill claim. When labels disagree, bag the waste.
