Fort Hays lists least-weasel tails at 26 to 44 mm, with no black tip. Male long-tailed weasel tails are 114 to 172 mm and end in black.
A pet ferret’s tail is thick and fairly even. It does not look like a long brown whip with a painted tip.

Long-tailed weasels sit in the middle. Fort Hays lists adult males at 347 to 463 mm and 226 to 401 grams. Adult females are 329 to 390 mm and 130 to 178 grams.
Pet ferrets sit above both. Marshall Small Pet Products lists adult females at 1 to 3 lb and males at 3 to 5 lb. Those ranges stay far above weasel grams.
Black-footed ferrets overlap pet-ferret length. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service lists 19 to 24 inches and 1.4 to 2.5 lb. Length alone cannot separate a pet ferret from that wild species.
Fort Hays also records intake. A least weasel feeds 5 to 10 times per day and needs about half its body weight in food. A long-tailed weasel can eat up to one-third of its weight in one sitting.
Those figures explain the body plan. A weasel is a thin pipe built to follow mice. A pet ferret is a heavier pipe built to live with people.
House ferret, wild weasel, and black-footed ferret
Three animals get mixed in American search results. Keep them in three bins.
Bin one is the pet ferret. The UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine says domestic ferrets reached North America as pets nearly 300 years ago. UC Davis lists four common coats: sable, albino, cinnamon, and Shetland sable.
Bin two is the wild weasel. In Kansas that means the least weasel and the long-tailed weasel. The Kansas Mammal Atlas holds 108 least-weasel records and 177 long-tailed weasel records.
Those counts are occurrence files, not a live census. They still show which wild species people actually document.
Bin three is the black-footed ferret. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says it is the only ferret species native to the Americas. Historical range covered 12 states, plus Saskatchewan and Chihuahua.
The Service listed the species on March 11, 1967. Anderson and colleagues, cited on that page, estimated 500,000 to 1 million animals in the late 1800s.
Prairie dogs made up 75 percent of the diet of adult males and juveniles. That figure comes from Brickner and colleagues, as cited by the Service.
Gestation numbers sit close and still help. UC Davis lists pet-ferret gestation at 41 to 42 days. The Service lists black-footed ferret gestation at about 42 to 45 days.
Fort Hays lists least-weasel gestation at 34 to 37 days. Long-tailed weasels delay implantation. Fort Hays lists total gestation at 205 to 337 days, averaging 279.

Why weasels stay wild, and where ferrets are banned
A weasel is a working predator, not a companion. Fort Hays says wild least weasels seldom live past 3 years, while captive records there reach 10 years. Long-tailed weasels last 3 to 4 years in the wild and up to 5 years in captivity.
Pet ferrets live longer on paper. The Merck Veterinary Manual lists 6 to 10 years. UC Davis and Marshall Small Pet Products both list 5 to 8 years.
Those spans assume a legal pet in a home, not a wild capture. Do not move a weasel into a bedroom. It is a wild animal with a high kill rate and a short gut.
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife states the legal line in plain words. Ferrets are not allowed as pets in California. The agency cites California Fish and Game Code section 2118.
Permits go to research, exhibition, education, or shelter, not to pet homes. Check your own state and city before you buy a ferret. This desk did not compile a 50-state statute table.
