Itch is not nesting.
The University of California Statewide IPM Program states that adult cat fleas are no larger than 1/8 inch. Females lay about 20 to 50 eggs per day. Those eggs are about 1/32 inch long.
The eggs are smooth. They fall into bedding and carpet.
UC IPM says the eggs hatch in about 2 to 5 days. Larvae stay no larger than 3/16 inch. They feed and crawl for 8 to 15 days.
They need at least 75% relative humidity. They prefer spots that stay 70° to 90°F.
At cool temperatures, UC IPM notes that fully formed fleas can remain in cocoons for up to 12 months. At normal room temperatures, the entire life cycle can occur in about 18 days. An adult usually lives about 30 to 40 days on the host.
When grooming is restricted, 85% of adult females survived for 50 days in the work UC IPM cites.
Vacuum the nap spots every day or every other day. UC IPM says vacuuming removes eggs, larvae, and adults. It also shakes hidden adults out of cocoons.
Wash pet bedding in hot, soapy water at least once a week.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reviews flea and tick pesticide active ingredients at least every 15 years. EPA’s flea-product page notes a split with the Food and Drug Administration that dates to the mid-1970s.

Buy a product that carries a clear EPA or FDA mark on the label. Read the species line. A dog label is not a cat label.
