Fix 3 is box count. The American Veterinary Medical Association says to keep enough boxes. That number is usually one more than the number of cats.
The 2021 AAHA/AAFP Feline Life Stage Guidelines say the same thing. Use one box per cat plus one extra. Place those boxes in different quiet rooms, not in a single row.
One cat needs two boxes. Two cats need three. Three cats need four.
Lined-up boxes in one closet count as one station. They do not count as three.
Fix 4 is box size. The 2021 AAHA/AAFP guidelines set a length rule. The box should be at least one and a half times the cat from nose to tail tip.
They also note that most manufactured boxes are too small.
A 16-inch cat needs about 24 inches on the long side. A 20-inch cat needs about 30 inches. If your cat turns with hips against the wall, the pan is short.
A larger open box often beats a small covered tray. Extra floor space keeps waste from smearing one corner.
High walls help your nose more than they help seniors. The 2021 AAHA/AAFP guidelines say edges should not be too high for a kitten or senior cat.

Dr. Elsey’s Ultra page says the formula is 99% dust-free and unscented. It uses natural clay and no perfumes. The directions say scoop twice daily and do not flush.
If you switch formulas, change the ratio slowly. World’s Best tells owners to start with one-third new litter. Then use two-thirds, then a full box.
Do not mix a flushable corn litter with a clay litter you must trash. Disposal rules differ. Fresh Step and Dr. Elsey’s both say do not flush.
Wash the plastic and the floor around it
Fix 6 is the pan itself. The 2021 AAHA/AAFP guidelines say to clean boxes regularly and replace them. They say hot water is best.
They also tell owners to avoid soap and strong chemicals. Residue from a citrus cleaner can linger. Some cats then skip the box.
A skipped box means urine on floors. That smell is worse than a scooped pan.
Empty the litter into a bag. Rinse with hot water. Dry the pan fully before you refill.

Fix 7 is the floor. Scooping does not remove urine that left the box. Tracked granules and missed clumps sit on baseboards and mats.
Use an enzymatic cleaner on hard floors and washable mats. Skip ammonia-based household cleaners. Ammonia can smell like urine to a cat and invite remarking.
Wash or replace the box mat on the same weekly cycle. A soggy mat under a clean pan will still sour the hallway.
If your cat pees outside the box, treat that as more than a smell problem. The American Veterinary Medical Association lists house soiling among signs that need a veterinary exam.
Ventilate the station instead of masking odor
Fix 8 starts with air, not perfume. A closed bathroom with no fan traps ammonia. A hooded box does the same thing in a smaller volume.

A litter-box enclosure can hide the station if it still vents. A sealed cabinet with no cutout just stores the smell. You notice it the next time you open the door.
Skip room sprays as the main plan. They cover the room for an hour. They do not remove waste or wash plastic.

When an automatic box is the next step
An automatic litter box can rake clumps between your two daily checks. It does not retire the weekly wash. It also does not replace the extra box.

Large cats need a roomy entry and a wide rake path. A cramped globe can smear waste on the drum. That smear becomes the smell you cannot find.
