Measure the dog, then read the interior
The American Kennel Club’s crate guide tells owners to measure standing height from the top of the head to the feet. Measure length from the tip of the nose to the tip of the tail. Add 3 to 4 inches to each measurement.
That sum is the crate height and length you need. That is a home-crate rule. It is not a flight formula.
The International Air Transport Association’s Traveler’s Pet Corner page uses different letters. A is nose to the base of the tail. B is ground to the elbow.
C is width at the shoulders or the widest point. D is standing height to the top of the head or the ear tip, whichever is higher.
IATA’s minimum internal length is A plus half of B. Internal width is C times 2. Internal height is D plus bedding.
Snub-nosed breeds require a container 10 percent larger. Use the AKC add-on for a house crate. Use the IATA formula if the crate must clear an airline desk.
Do not buy from weight class alone. A tall sighthound and a heavy mastiff can share a weight and still need different height.
The 48-by-40 Clearance Check
Here is the rule we applied after reading the maker pages. Listed length must be 48 inches or more. Listed height must be 40 inches or more before we treat the crate as giant-tall.
Of the five currently sold models below, only two clear both numbers. Those two are the Impact Collapsible Dog Crate 54-inch Triple Extra Large and the Lucky Dog Dwell Series 54-inch size.
The other three models clear 48 inches of length. They miss 40 inches of height. They can still fit some large dogs.
They fail many adult giant breeds that already stand 32 inches at the withers. The American Kennel Club’s Official Standard of the Great Dane sets that floor. The standard was approved July 9, 2018, and became effective January 1, 2019.
A male shall not be less than 30 inches at the shoulders. The standard says it is preferable that he be 32 inches or more. A female shall not be less than 28 inches, with 30 inches preferred.
Withers are not ear tips. A 32-inch male Dane is already taller than 32 inches when you count head and ears. IATA’s D measurement uses the higher of head or ear tip.

Impact’s help page states that internal dimensions of all of its crates are just 1/2 inch less than the external figures. Apply that cut to the 54-inch 3XL. The interior is about 54.0 by 35.0 by 41.5 inches.
Lucky Dog’s Dwell Series table is the source for the 54-inch row. That table lists 54 by 37 by 40 inches and 61.0 pounds.
Carlson’s own page disagrees with itself on height. The body copy says the crate fits dogs up to 28 inches tall. The specification block says 24 inches tall.
Why a 48-inch airline kennel fails many adult Danes
Petmate’s Sky Kennel page lists the 48-inch size at 48 by 32 by 35 inches on the outside. Interior dimensions are 44 inches long, 29 inches wide, and 32.5 inches high. The published weight range is 90 to 125 pounds.
The kennel itself weighs 51.5 pounds. Four inches of length disappear between the label and the floor. That is the shell wall, not a rounding error.
The 32.5-inch interior height is the harder miss. It sits 0.5 inch above the AKC preferred male Great Dane withers height of 32 inches. It sits below a standing Dane once ears and a pad enter the math.
IATA’s height rule is D plus bedding, not D alone. Petmate’s own sizing note says the kennel should be 3 to 4 inches taller and longer than the dog. That note matches the AKC add-on.
The same Petmate page says the kennel complies with the 51st edition (2025) of the IATA Live Animals Regulations. IATA’s current Traveler’s Pet Corner page now points to Container Requirement 1 for LAR 2026. Confirm the edition your airline is using.
IATA also says animals over 14 kilograms must be crated individually. A giant-breed adult is over that mark. Do not plan to share one XXL crate between two adult dogs on a flight.
The American Kennel Club’s Irish Wolfhound page calls that breed the tallest of all AKC breeds. Impact’s 54-inch 3XL page is the only model in our set that names Irish Wolfhound. Height, not the XXL sticker, is why.
Wire, plastic, and aluminum: match the build to the job
A house crate and a cargo kennel are different tools. Buy the tool that matches the job.
Carlson’s Extra-Large Double-Door Dog Crate, model 6025, measures 48 by 30 by 32.5 inches. It folds flat and includes a divider. Carlson backs it with a limited 6-month warranty.
Lucky Dog’s 48-inch Dwell size measures 48 by 30 by 32 inches and weighs 39.7 pounds. The 54-inch Dwell size is the one that meets our 40-inch height cut.
Impact’s 54-inch 3XL crate weighs 70 pounds. The 48-inch 2XL crate weighs 48 pounds. Both use 0.817-inch ventilation holes.
The 54-inch Impact size is 35.5 inches wide, or 38 inches with side rails. Measure your hallway before you order.
Petmate states the Sky Kennel uses EcoTEC plastic with a minimum of 90 percent pre-consumer recycled material. Only the 21-inch and 28-inch sizes include a handle. The 36-inch, 40-inch, and 48-inch sizes ship by freight.
If your dog already uses a 42-inch crate and still has headroom, you may not need XXL. That case belongs in our large-dog crate guide. Giant adults who fail a 32-inch ceiling do not.
Giant-breed puppies and divider panels
The American Kennel Club’s crate article says a puppy crate should be as large as the typical adult size of the breed. Use a divider and open space as the puppy grows.
Lucky Dog’s Dwell Series page lists a divider panel on that crate. Carlson’s 6025 page also lists an adjustable divider. Impact’s Collapsible page does not list a puppy divider on the 54-inch 3XL.
Buy the adult length now if your puppy is a Great Dane or Irish Wolfhound. Then block the unused half. A 36-inch starter crate becomes junk in months.
House-training still needs a small sleeping zone. Extra floor space lets a puppy toilet in one corner and sleep in the other.

When a large crate is enough
A 48-inch crate with about 32 inches of height can fit many large breeds. It can fail a square, tall giant.
Run three checks before you keep a 48-inch box. Can the dog stand without the ears hitting the roof? Can the dog turn in one motion?
Can the dog lie on its side with legs out? If any check fails, move to a 54-inch class with 40 inches of listed height. Do not add a thicker bed to a short crate.
If all three checks pass, you do not need a wider giant crate. Extra width is unused floor for house-training.
Doorways are the last filter. A 54.5 by 35.5 by 42-inch crate will not sneak through a 30-inch interior door while assembled. Plan a fold, a two-person lift, or a different room.
